Great, affordable, urban camping. Safe, clean bath houses and restrooms, neat activities lead by Parks and Recreation, excellent staff. Staff is honest, and extremely helpful in getting around on trains affordably. Historic planes with tours by retired vets was neat. Only complaint which is no fault of the campgrounds was that mosquitoes were extremely bad. Unlike anything we've ever seen and we've been traveling and camping for years. We returned late each night, hurried into tent (fully covered and with repellent) and left in a haste each morning after showers while taking necessary precautions.

It was nice to stay in NY for two weeks in an RV for less than $20 a day. Sure we battled 1,000 mosquitos and heard drivers burning rubber in the wee hours of the night... but that is one reason to purchase ear plugs and wear bug spray like a necessary companion. The parking lot was so big that the rubber burners were not a danger to us which is what I mainly care about. Also, if you make it past these obstacles then you've got a good story to tell...and who doesn't like a good story...anybody?
Overall, these were small inconveniences in a great big city of fun fun fun!! Thank you Camp Gateway and Ranger Pat...this was a great experience (with some minor annoyances)... ;-)

If you like a campground open to visitors day and night, where people drive at high speed and come drifting in their sports cars, where you have to basically keep your kids on a leash to avoid them being ran over, a place where you won't get any sleep cause the party boats cruise by with blasting music from 1am till 4-5 am, well this is your place!
It's not worth 30$ a night...
You can't make a fire in the RV section of the campground although you're surrounded by concrete for miles around!
The showers don't have a single hook, the ceilings are falling apart and they don't even have hand soap dispensers in the bathroom, so I guess the people working at the camp store never wash their hands properly either.

For a place to camp in NYC its not bad at all. It's on an old air field that still has helicopter traffic but it's cool. Positives... very safe. It's far enough from the hood that you don't have to worry about anything. The ranger is very helpful and cool and the sites have picnic tables and fire pits along with grills. Negatives.... mosquitos are the worst I have experienced and we are from Florida. They don't even care if you cover your self in cutter. Lots of raccoons. They are not afraid of people so )/bringing bring your food and backpacks inside. First night one went in my wife's purse. All in all we camp a lot and I would come back here. Fyi you can not walk to the subway or bus so be prepared to pay for parking in the city. Other notes.... They have camp store, hot showers, clean bathrooms.
