What a great way to get off the grid just 40 minutes away from the city to get some peace and quiet. Safe and secure location, literally just steps from the beach. The tents are top notch, solar powered lights and fans, lots of headroom to move around in, with comfortable beds with soft sheets and Pendleton blankets if you need an extra layer for warmth. There's a fire pit/grill if you'd like to prepare food for yourself, or just take a walk to the vendors nearby for some quick eats. And the outdoor shower! Awesome design, with warm water for you to rinse off in privacy. The crew is super friendly and very informative. Great vibes all around. We'll definitely be back!
I love staying at Camp Rockaway for a weekend getaway! You get the benefit of 2 days at the beach, communal environment, open fire roasted veggies/meat, and comfy eco-conscious accommodations. Even when it rains, it’s beautiful and cozy to be at the beach and you get full protection within the tents. They also have games and a table area that is completely protected/covered. Highly recommend!
Intimate location with roomy tents, clean linen, hammocks for everyone! All you need to bring is yourself and a change of clothes or at least underclothes. For the glamper, fear not! There are warm, enclosed showers, a clean restroom with mirrors, and a device charging station so you can post every second of your stay to social media . Kent and Sophie are personable and accommodating hosts who helped make our stay as smooth a possible. Take some food to throw on the communal grill. They even have grilling utensils! NOTE: Bring food, or prepare to order, because there are no eateries within walking distance. Roast some house marshmallows and take a stroll on the quiet beach. Tents have their own lighting, fans, and solar lamps are provided for guests. And even in this fall weather, the tents do a fine job of keeping the ocean breeze at bay. The shorline is close here, amplifying the peaceful sound of the ocean. We had such a good experience, we're going to try to catch them one more time before they close by the end of this October. So, get in while you can! And, for extra cool points, bring Kent an Impossible Burger.
One of the most memorable & wonderful evenings I have experienced. Camp Rockaway is perfect- comfortable, beautiful location and magical. I can't wait to come back next summer and will bring my whole family to enjoy the serenity and calming energy so close to the city yet so far removed.
A diamond in the rough. Its nice to know that serene places like this exist in our hectic city. The staff was welcoming and my daughter loved it, which is what matters most! I suggest to bring your own food and do not rely on the beach food stores, as the hours are not camper friendly.
I had an excellent stay at Camp Rockaway the first weekend it opened: September 24, 2017. It was unseasonably warm that weekend, and it felt like summer. As one of the first guests, they were still setting up some of the campground, but I was treated with great hospitality by Kent and Wade. Upon arriving for the bring-your-own tent section of the camp, they gave me an excellent plot to pitch my tent. Pitching the tent and securing it were easy, as the location of the camp is about a few minute walk from the beach at Fort Tilden, so you don't get direct wind from the Atlantic. Also, the camp site is on grass and not sand, so the tent stakes held excellent in the grass. I was able to check out some of the brand new tent cabins, and they're luxurious! Very comfortable mattress with nice amenities including custom wood-cut nightstands and high-end sheets and blankets. There's a private restroom facility--a luxurious bathroom trailer with hot water showers, similar to what you see at location film shoots. The bathroom is located just around the corner from the campground. The firepit in the middle of the camp is a nice touch, where you can meet and greet others from the camp, and the staff even provided S'mores on my visit. You'll need to pack in your own food, and you can bring food to grill as they have a grill on top of the campfire as well. Parking is nearby, so you can bring in whatever you need to make your stay comfortable. They provided a large jug of ice water that I used to fill my water bottles. I experienced no bugs/mosquitos out there, and the tents zip up tight if that's an issue. It's not too far from JFK Airport, so some nights depending on how the planes are being routed, you may hear planes overhead. It wasn't an issue for me, and I slept very well to the distant sounds of crickets and waves crashing. But note that light sleepers may need earplugs. I also recommend you bring a flashlight and headlamp as it gets dark out there away from the city lights. The highlight of my trip to Camp Rockaway was getting up just before dawn, walking a few minutes to the beach, and seeing the sunrise over the Rockaways. I then packed up and cycled 1 hour, 45 minutes into Manhattan for work on Monday. It was a great way to start off the week!
My husband took me here on a surprise date and we had a fabulous time! The guys who run the campsite Sophia and co. are friendly and accommodating. We really appreciated the little details, such as solar powered lamps, fans, torches, and hot shower. At night there is a campfire where you can cook dinner and make s’mores. The bed was so comfy I had trouble getting up in the morning! Camp Rockaway supplies earplugs but if you want to sleep past sunrise, I’d suggest bringing an eye mask. I’e recommend bringing a bike you can take it on the NYC Ferry or renting one of the dock less bike shares Lime and Pace operate out of Rockaway, and Lime has e-assist bikes, which are super fun. There are plenty of bike paths and it’s quite an adventure zipping down the boardwalk on one. For food we enjoyed the concessions at Beach 96 and Beach 106. I generally try to avoid dairy and gluten, and had an easy time finding healthy, delicious food to eat at Caracas Arepas and Uma’s. Overall we had an amazing experience. Next time we’d definitely bring our daughter and invite some friends to join.
This place is absolutely relaxing no matter the weather! We were here for 3 days 2 nights and went through rain, blazing sun and just right breezes all in which were fantastic experiences! Wade is extremely accommodating... He made us feel so very comfortable and his attitude towards everything is just so welcoming... Exactly what we needed coming from the hustle and bustle of uptown Manhattan... I'm DEFINITELY going to be back a few more times before the season is over... Oh and another bonus is the log fire and the s'mores! Wish there was a 10 star button!
It was very relaxing and the owner was accommodating! The waves lulled me to sleep. Camp setting. Beach is right next to site. There's a station with complimentary teas, hot chocolate and coffee which was a bonus. There's a grill you can use freely.
Wonderful! My first experience glamping and I will return. It was fun girls trip to the Rockaways, the tents were comfortable. The firepit and s'mores reminded us of our childhood. And it was perfect for different types: there were families with kids, birthday celebrants and couples.
