Story

The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, both a parish church and a cathedral church, is the seat of the Archbishop of Detroit and the mother church of the Archdiocese of Detroit. As such, it is the “second parish” of the Catholic faithful in southeast Michigan.

In 1905, Bishop Foley authorized the construction of a new parish, named Most Blessed Sacrament, on land that was then outside the city limits, north of Grand Boulevard.

The Norman Gothic design for the church building was drawn by architect Henry A. Walsh, of Cleveland, Ohio. Construction on the church building began in 1913 and was completed in 1915. However, the interior of the church would not be complete until 1930. The church was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day 1930 at a solemn Mass celebrated by Bishop Gallagher. Detroit was elevated to an archdiocese in 1938 and on February 20, 1938, Most Blessed Sacrament Parish became the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament by decree of Pope Pius XI. The Vatican representative who came to Detroit to inspect the proposed cathedral on Woodward Avenue was Giovanni Battista Montini, later Blessed Pope Paul VI.

"The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament is a prayerful Roman Catholic Apostolic Center where everyone is warmly invited to engage in the transcendent beauty of our sacraments, arts, faith formation, community life, service, and missionary outreach in order to encounter Jesus Christ, grow in their relationship with Him, and witness His merciful love to each other and the world."

The original Cathedral architecture was absolutely gorgeous gothic. The new looking marble was reminiscent of Star Trek. And our priest for Mass looked like Sir Patrick Stewart! It definitely a modern liturgy, but the people were so friendly it's hard to say anything negative.
Amazing experience. When you are there you feel calmness and peace, similar to "there is no place like home" feel. The holy spirit is present there. Father JJ always has good words to say and good lessons to be learned. Chris the business manager is very helpful with educating people about the church as well as helping couples with setting up weddings.
I walked into the Cathederal for the first time Martin Luther King Day 2020 it was awesome. Something told me to comeback of course it was The Lord. I later finally became a member not really having a home church. Praise God !
I visited the Cathedral on October 1 for a special service, my first visit. The beautiful architecture captures the acoustics beautifully. Truly a lovely place to hear the Word of the Lord!
So welcoming as always. Today we even met some new members. It has been nice coming home and being able to attend mass at the church I was baptized and alot of my family and that my mom and dad were married. I love that after JJ and everyone are here to help guide me and my little one on our new journey. Thank you for everything and all your prayers to get us home.
My sons wedding was this past Thursday with Father JJ. The most beautiful ceremony in the most beautiful house of our Lord. The wedding coordinators were on top of everything and the business manager Chris was very informative on the history of the church. Nickolas and Jessica are so blessed to begin as one at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and we are all BLESSED as well to have witnessed their union.
Beautiful! Praise the Lord! This place is amazing. My cousin's wedding was here and I cherish the building and time.
Archbishop Vigneron is well spoken and close to the public. Beautiful building. Come here to witness God's presence.
Absolutely beautiful cathedral and amazing service. Went there for my Rite of Election for my confirmation. Easy to hear everything, very welcoming, loved the interspersed Spanish and English. Exceptionally moving. Loved it here.
Gorgeous cathedral.. the praise stops there. My sister recently had her wedding here. Terrible experience from the start. Totally unorganized and lacking anything remotely close to professionalism. During the rehearsal, the wedding coordinators two women were on totally different pages, failed to communicate the process during the run through and hurried us out as they had another group coming for their rehearsal. HUGE FORESHADOWING TO THE DAY OF THE WEDDING!! On the day of the wedding, we were greeted with utmost rudeness and attitude from our coordinator after she promptly informed us we "came in the wrong doors"- hold that thought for a minute. Our guests then arrived to find EVERY entrance to the church locked. Locked- ten minutes before we were supposed to start the wedding. Our coordinator was rushing to get the bridal party started down the aisle and the ceremony started with an empty church and no music playing. After objecting and delaying the ceremony until everyone was seated we had to unlock the doors ourselves to let our guests in we began the ceremony. My phone was taken from me, but I would guess about 15-20 minutes after we were supposed to start. the mass itself was beautiful and Father did a nice job commemorating the sacrament. My only complaint kind of a big one was the crackly audio during the vows and processional music. After the ceremony, once the marriage certificate had been signed, we had approx. 25 minutes to take pictures before wee were essentially escorted form the church because they had another wedding starting and guests were arriving. While I am glad the doors were open for the next couple and their guests, IF the coordinators who were representing the Church to this young couple and their guests had spent more time ensuring the doors were open for our wedding, perhaps things would have been more smooth for us. So a few warnings to those considering receiving the sacrament of matrimony here in the future: 1 Beware who your coordinators are 2 Double check your readings ours were not the reading chosen by the bride and groom- despite asking for them to be corrected 3 If videotaping, do not rely on the church audio, insist your videographer has you wearing your own microphone. 4 If your wedding is in the morning or the first of the day, make a beeline to the doors to ensure they are unlocked so your guests can enter the cathedral and you can have a stress free day.
