What an absolutely charming bookstore! It's in a quiet little neighborhood in South Portland, and it's the perfect place to browse to your heart's content! They have a neat selection of poetry and fiction, as well as all sorts of other treasures. It's got that classic, old-school bookstore charm that every city and every neighborhood needs. Highly recommended!!
Ordered a book from them online. The book was accurately described, an art forgotten, or never acquired by many online booksellers. The book was wrapped like a tank - neatly wrapped in brown craft paper, then placed inside a sturdy ribbed corrugated cardboard protective wrap, which in turn was placed inside a bubble-wrap padded envelope. The order was also quickly shipped to me. A true pleasure in dealing with a totally professional outfit. You can order from them with complete confidence in their performance. I certainly will in the future!!
Fantastic little bookstore with new and used books! I adore their extensive art album collection in particular. Fun, quiet place to browse. I have been able to buy a huge amount of books here for an incredibly reasonable price.
Really enjoyed my time here. They have a nice selection, good prices, and a good environment to browse, or sit and read for a bit. So glad to have this shop in the neighborhood.
Beautiful location, very good for Western/Oregon/Pac NW history and ephemera, strong for history overall, strong for photography monographs, then a reasonably good selection for classics, literature, poetry, science, art, etc. Prices are a bit high.
Wonderful book shop. I forgot how good it feels to be in an actual bookstore. So many selections from all ages to delight and interest all ages. Volumes of gorgeousness just to possess. Very reasonable prices. Beautifully playful paintings by local artist.
This place is great! Found what I was looking for for less than half the price of Amazon. They are the upper floor, corner of Mitchell and Corbett. I went at night, so the pic here sent me in circles. Updates!!
Chaparral Books is a fun place to browse many wonder used books! I’m partial to the selection, ranging from Pacific Northwest history to railroads! The staff are attentive and always have excellent recommendations. I try to come here weekly as the inventory can change quickly. If you see something you like, don’t wait! I learned that the hard way, but I’m always going to come back!
I ordered a used book through their website. It shipped quickly, and I've never received a book that was packed so carefully. Their condition description enumerated every little defect, but in reality it's in better condition than any book I've read through once. I appreciate the thorough assessment.
Outstanding neighborhood bookstore with well curated inventory, lots of classic modern lit titles -- nice Hemingway, Steinbeck sections for example -- and a patient and friendly staff. Fair prices too. If you want to avoid Powell's and have a sort of small town experience, you can't go wrong here. PS: I went to Powell's the next day and scoured the shelves and came away empty for the 1st time ever. It may be related to their book-buying hiatus but Chaparral FAR SURPASSED Powell's in quality. Do yourself a favor and try this place. There is ample free parking, a place to grab a beer and a bite directly across the street and a diverse and fascinating selection of modern literature and history.
