Historical Landmark of BedStuy. I hope he opens back up after this pandemic. Friendly family staple. We need that now!! I have a friend, cleaning his apt out and I suggested he turn over his vinyl collection to Charlie's, so we need him back!
Friendly long-standing spot specializing in Soca & Calypso records from the 80s & 90s and wider range of R&B CDs. Also has equipment for turntables and stereos, including styluses. Not a lot of new inventory.
I used to come here all the time but the owner has become increasingly hostile senile maybe?. He was having a conversation with someone so wasn't available to help my girlfriend and I which we didn't mind, but then went we tried to pay he began to curse at us and said we were trying to rob him, even though we were paying him the exact amount he just tallied us up for. After about 2 minutes of us asking him what the matter was and asking him to take our money so we can buy these items and support his business, he yelled racist comments to my girlfriend who's Indian. He then told me that I was trying to rip him off because he's black. The irony being that I'm black and actually darker skinned than he is. Similar situations have happened to a few people I know and other local business owners have said he's been doing this a lot lately. I think the owner has just become senile. I don't recommend going here. There's another great record store around the corner with a bigger selection, better prices, and a much friendlier owner.
Fantastic record store that is true to providing authenic Caribbean music. I had the pleasure of visiting the business during the Caribbean Festival in Brooklyn this year.. Oh Lordie, what a great time my family had in Charlie's. Live DJ, socoa dancing and free Caribbean food while outside the stage was jamming with a live band and large friendly crowd. Needless to say the owner and friends treated the community very well and welcoming at the record store. Sincerly Rags 1Love!
Picked up ten Calpyso records from the 80s/90s here. All were sealed and around $9-10 each. The owner spent a lot of time helping me pick out the hottest ones. He gave me some history of the place since most of the records were recorded upstairs back in the day. I really wanted the analog sound. I was not interested in a digital sourced vinyl. The owner said they didn't start recording digitally till the early 2000s . I am not sure the hours of operation, but I swung by noon on a weekday and they were open.
You can get any kind of music. Music from back in the days and if you stay long enough you would be educated on the singers. And the atomsphere is great
This place has a variety of Caribbean music to choose from. Be sure to pre-review DVD's of Caribbean events as all may not be original.
Charlie’s is back open! Still got a great collection of records
Charlie's Records is a staple of Brooklyn I go back to my dj days 30 years ago...
Great collection of Caribbean music for decades
