A nice art museum in the center of Detroit. The collection is rather small containing works of contemporary, classical and naive art. The most exciting part of the museum, in my opinion, is the first floor filled with African statues and artifacts from ancient Mesopotamia. Each piece of art is supplied with detailed instruction of what you should see and what it can mean. Overall this is the best public space in Detroit I visited so far

We love seeing movies at the Detroit Film Theater...the old theater is just beautiful inside (art deco). They have a very nice cafe on the 2nd level as well. Parking is available across the street in a large fenced guarded lot. Do not recommend parking on the nearby streets since our car was broken into 1 time. The seating inside the theater was reupholstered recently and are very comfortable. The crowds that attend the theater are well behaved...there is no food or drink allowed outside the cafe area.

I was a chaperone for my daughter's 4th grade class. I was pleasantly surprised at how interactive the experience is for guests. They have ' Eye Spy' clues throughout the museum that encourage guests to be more observant and engaged. There are also helpful agents in many of the exhibits who share interesting facts. There is so much to see! We'll definitely be back.

Filled with works of art that span the planet, the Detroit Institute of Art is a fantastic display of creativity. There are thousands of works throughout the beautiful architecture, far more than can be seen in a day. Make sure you pick some "must see" sections before you explore the museum. However, with all of this beautiful art comes a price. I'm not referring to admission, which is reasonable (and even free if you're a resident of the area). I refer, of course, to the school field trips that fill the DIA on weekdays. Obnoxious, loud, and disruptive are the best ways to describe these groups. The children have little interest in the art, and instead choose to loudly converse or play among the priceless art. Make sure to plan your trip for a weekend, to avoid this needless disruption. Regardless of the unwanted distractions, the art on display is deeply moving, enlightening, and a sight to behold. The staff is also deeply knowledgeable, providing an extra history or meaning to works.

A hidden gem in a city that has outlived it's usefulness in many respects that make this a place lost in both time and space. Hardly anyone in there during our entire visit but so much to see that was both surprising and interesting! I enjoyed it quite a bit and hope that the city around it becomes revitalized soon!!
