Discovery School of Va

I worked at the school for over two years and could not think more highly of the school as a place to work and grow, whether student or staff. There are no doubt challenging parts to living and working in the woods but the lessons you learn about yourself and how to handle situations and emotions are both innumerable and invaluable. I was lucky to see such growth from the girls that come through the school and such teamwork and commitment from the people that work there. It was a wonderful experience as my first full-time job out of university, taught me a lot that I will carry with me always.

I worked at Discovery School of Virginia for Girls when it first opened from 2008 to 2010. It is difficult to put the right words to my first experience at Discovery. I came from a background working in adult corrections specifically with a difficult male population. My desire to work in a wilderness setting with youth led to Discovery and it changed my life. The staff grow as much as the students and are truly devoted to doing whatever they can within the therapeutic model and the relationships built under that construct to assist students with bettering their current lives as well as their hopes for the future. After Discovery I spent time working in other residential and day treatment programs in the state of Virginia and also in the corporate world in North Dakota. My family and I made the choice happily to relocate when the opportunity to return to Discovery presented itself. Since my return I have witnessed the dedication of the administration to adapt and improve the therapeutic principles to provide a more comprehensive and meaningful experience for the students and their families. There is simply no place like Discovery. I will not say it is easy...I don't believe it is easy for the students to come and the families to place them here. However, I can attest that it is the most solid residential program that I have ever been a part of.

This school is so much more than a school. Staff and students alike develop a family-type relationship and connection to all that are a part of Discovery School. In my time as a group leader and as I have stayed connected to the school since leaving, I have witnessed so many amazing young girls develop crucial life and social skills. I visited the campus for two girls that worked incredibly hard to stay past their original length at the program just to graduate high school from Discovery School of Virginia for Girls.

Working at Discovery School for Girls is an experience I will never forget. I am a better person because of my time there. I saw so much growth in the students and so much growth in myself.

I went to this school 4 or 5 years ago and it honestly changed my life. Obviously it’s not for everyone but if your willing to change yourself it’s awesome. You learn soemthing about people and yourself almost everyday. I’ll never forget the great experience of going there.
