O LUSO-AMERICANO é o único órgão de informação em língua portuguesa com circulação nacional entre as comunidades portuguesa e brasileira nos Estados Unidos. Story HISTORY OF THE “LUSO-AMERICANO" The "LUSO-AMERICANO" newspaper was founded in 1928 by a group of Portuguese businessmen Dr. J. Lobo, Dr. M. Conceição Jr., Manuel Castro and Valentim Rocha in Newark, New Jersey. The newspaper had a difficult start. The market for a Portuguese newspaper was weak. According to the Census of 1930, there were only 6209 Portuguese and Luso-Americans in New Jersey, of which 4411 were born in Portugal. During that period the U.S. economy was beginning to show symptoms of the great depression which occurred from 1929 through the early 1930's. In December of 1939, the newspaper was revitalized under the direction of Vasco Jardim, an immigrant from Madeira, who initiated the publication as it exists today. In 1988, the weekly newspaper began publication bi-weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays. The newspaper has two offices in Newark at 88 Ferry Street and 66 Union Street. In 1998 the editorial and production departments were moved to a modern facility at 66 Union Street in Newark, with up-to-date computerized equipment. The original headquarters remain at 88 Ferry Street where the newspaper office has been since 1944. This location houses the circulation, billing, customer service departments and the bookstore. In 2010 an electronic version in the internet was built. The "LUSO-AMERICANO" has on staff 5 full time journalists, various collaborators and dozens of correspondents currently under the leadership of executive director Antonio Matinho, operational director Paul Matinho and news editor Luis Pires. Currently, the "LUSO-AMERICANO" is the only means of social communication among the Portuguese communities nationwide, with a circulation in all states where Portuguese live. HISTÓRIA DO 'LUSO-AMERICANO' O jornal "Luso-Americano" foi fundado em 1928 em Newark, New Jersey, por um grupo de portugueses da qual faziam parte o Dr. J. Lobo, o Dr. M. Conceição Junior, Manuel Castro e Valentim Rocha. O arranque não foi fácil. Era reduzido o mercado existente para um jornal em língua portuguesa. Segundo o Censo de 1930, residiam no estado de New Jersey apenas 6209 portugueses, 4411 dos quais nascidos em Portugal. Por outro lado, na economia americana afloravam os primeiros sintomas da profunda recessão económica que marcaria o fim da década e o início dos anos 30. O jornal não resistiu. Em Dezembro de 1939, o título foi retomado por Vasco Jardim, que lançou o jornal que é hoje o "Luso-Americano", sendo seu director até 1979, ano em que o passou ao seu genro António Matinho. Em 1988, tornou-se um bi-semanário, estatuto que mantém, sendo publicado à quarta e sexta-feira. Em 1998, a redacção e a secção de publicidade do jornal foram instaladas num prédio moderno situado no 66 da Union Street, Newark, permanecendo o escritório no endereço "histórico" do jornal 88 Ferry Street, Newark, onde foi a sua sede desde 1944. Nesta estão localizados, os departamentos de distribuição, contabilidade, serviço ao cliente e livraria. Em 2010 uma versão electrónica foi contruida para a Internet. Fazem parte do corpo redactorial deste bi-semanário 5 jornalistas a tempo inteiro, vários colaboradores e dezenas de correspondentes. António Matinho é o director executivo do jornal, Paul Matinho é o director de operações e o chefe de redacção Luis Pires. Presentemente, o "Luso-Americano" é o único órgão de informação em língua portuguesa com circulação nacional entre as comunidades portuguesa e brasileira nos Estados Unidos.
