Story As a result of his pioneering research, Dr. Maclaren believes that 1 in 4 people have genetic defects of their metabolism that cause weight-gain. He and his colleagues pioneered the use of antibody and genetic markers to identify those at risk for type-1 diabetes in the general population. He made discoveries of many disease marker antibodies that can predict the onset of life-threatening conditions like Addison’s disease. He was a member of the American Diabetes Association committee that first classified types of diabetes by their causes rather than their treatments. He first described autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS-1) currently used worldwide and identified alcohol induced hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and the mechanism whereby recreational alcohol consumption can lead the shut-down of the liver’s ability to generate glucose needed to fuel brain function.
