Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts

About

Foci MCGA is a nonprofit glass studio, education center and exhibition space dedicated to the education and exhibition of glass arts.

Story

Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts, Foci MCGA, seeks to engage the Minnesota community in the study and appreciation of glass arts by offering classes, demonstrations, workshops and other avenues toward understanding the potential of the glass art form. The studio is a central location and community for professional and emerging glass artists, located in Minneapolis, MN. The organization began as Foci Glass, a for-profit business in Toledo, Ohio opened by Michael Boyd and his brother, Scott Boyd.

Michael moved the business to Minneapolis in 2001 and began to rent studio time to local glass artists, and eventually began teaching classes. In the summer of 2009, the studio received fiscal sponsorship from Spring Board for the Arts and applied for non-profit status, receiving 501(c)3 status in 2010. Foci Glass transformed into Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts and has been a part of Minnesota and, specifically, the Twin Cities arts community and has since been an educator, promoter, and exhibitor of glass art and artists.

We came with a group to learn how to make our own glass paper weights. The class was excellent! Our instructor went above and beyond by explaining things very well, answering all our questions and even making it educational. The best part? They really want you to do as much of it on your own which was really fun. I appreciated that our instructor walked us through the whole entire process first and then was ready to assist us if we needed it. The worst part? The class goes by so fast because you’re having such a good time. Make sure to check out their shop too which is full of handmade items. They also offer a variety of classes for all ages.
Did the Discovery class with my wife for a birthday gift. The place is well kept and the staff is very friendly helpful and engaging. They are also encouraging with their teaching and do a good job explaining everything you will be doing. Definitely worth a try. We will get to pick up our pieces we made in the next week.
This place is amazing. Im on my 2nd visit and the teachers are amazing. I will keep coming back, in fact i need to use my next groupon. They help every step of the way and are not short of being amazing teachers!
3rd time doing one of the classes offered. Best $85 ever spent. Absolutly the coolest afternoon you could ever do. Highly recommended! Jenn, our instructor was absolutly awesome! Our 15 year old loved her and wants to go back for more!
Red was an amazing instructor and i absolutely loved learning from him today. He was patient with me and very clear with his instructions. He is super knowledgeable! He has a great vibe and energy and you can feel his passion for what he does. He truly loves what he is doing and i can see why. This was an amazing experience and i cant wait to go back to do this again or to try another experience from red. This place rocks! Super impressive space, very clean and well organized and great location.
Our family attended "glass discovery" class - essentially an introduction to furnace work. Isaac, our instructor, was knowledgeable and friendly. He made us feel comfortable with the tools and allowed this to truly be an engaging hands on experience. Whether this becomes a regular hobby or a one time experience, I'd definitely recommend it!
Took the paper weight class here one afternoon and loved it. The instructor was friendly, cautious about safety and overall created a fun experience. Oh and the paperweights turned out great. Such a fun souvenir. I have recommended the class to lots already!
AMAZING experience. Clara was our instructor for the paperweight class. She was a blast and and such a great teacher. Highly recommend for everyone!
We really enjoyed our Discovery Fusing class with Emma. It was a lot of fun and she's a great instructor.
Such a blast learning about glass fusion and creating my own piece of glass art. Instructor was educated and helpful. Would definitely recommend!
