I went in on a whim and to check their inventory. They happened to be one of the few stores open that day in the city for bicycles. I actually walked by the place not realizing it was in the basement. Walking down there it was like a hidden secret bike laboratory with bike stuff all over. The owner Jeff came out and stopped everything he was doing to help me and my wife. He made sure even though he was alone and over burdened with work that he did nothing but give us his full undivided attention. He is a funny guy with a lot of experience and funny stories to tell. Most importantly he knows everything about every bike and part in that place and the industry. He does get a little side tracked but it's worth it. No other bike place I've been too has had a knowledgeable guy like Jeff who really lives and breathes bicycles. He care about the sport and hobby as well as the people who ride. He told me about the service and help he provides to all the local bike messenger and delivery people. He custom fit everything we wanted and me and my wife now have amazing bikes that were great quality and not overly expensive. Really recommend this place, honestly an honest business with a funny quirky owner who keeps it real and honest.
Frankenstein Bike Worx is an old school bike shop which supports urban riders in center city Philadelphia. In a world where bike shops are built to support your personal image, Jeff forgoes the condescension and provide reliable durable parts and service based on decades of experience with a classically blunt Philadelphia attitude. If you are looking to be validated do your research and choose the appropriate flavor of bike shop. If you are looking for reliable parts and service bring your bike here. I know, do to a long string of positive personal life choices, I will always be given a hard time when I walk through the door, but that is part of the fun and charm.
Any shop that offers anything important - like repairs and maintenance - should be honest about their hours. Closed early, causing me a major inconvenience. Their voicemail message also indicates they should be open.
@McCoy Sebrell - just wanted to share my experience at Frankinstien Bike Worx. I bought a bicycle from there ~ 18 years ago. The bike was great but the owner was as “ornery & unique” my kind words as you described. And I was at the time a 30-something white guy. So the good ? news is I dunno that he’s racist because he treats everyone as rudely as you were treated. I was warned about it before going in so didn’t take it personally. A leopard and its spots. I’m sorry you had to experience him unwarned, though.
Terrible bike shop, racist owner. I Walked in to ask for help with a stripped bolt, from the beginning it felt as if I was a burden to the owner. There was specific questions he asked to me that made me feel as if he was hinting or suggesting towards something. "Who built this bike ?" as if I wasn't capable of building it myself. weird. He looks at the bolts and measures their size and asks "what did you do to it?" he asked disrespectfully. I remained silent. He went for his tool and " pop" " pop" both bolts came loose. he turns around and walks away to which I asked " is it done?" " yes" he responded and then unnecessarily added "probably took better tools that you have" This interaction letting me feeling unusual and confused. I almost wanted to ask if it was my skin color, was that the reason I'm confused right now? I just turned around and walked away, grateful for the help.
Been coming there for years, the owner knows everything that Philly has a to offer with its potholes, bike thieves, what methods to use when locking up your bike, etc. Not only that, he's skilled and knows what's right for you and your ride. Just always listen to him, don't be stubborn or ignorant, he's experienced and highly skilled.
The work is good. Prices are good. Jeff is good at realizing what works for your needs. However, he's a bit opinionated and quirky. If you know that, and don't mind, then you get a wealth of experience and knowledge with your service. This is a great place for the Urban Rider. I wanted an unusual step thru bike that i had seen miles away. Jeff knew it and knew the better brand.
Great bike shop, Jeff is super helpful.
I too will agree with another that they guy is a character. Looking past the foul mouth and talk of what makes his bikes the best, I do think that he knows what he's talking about. His prices on bikes were good for what he carried compared to other shops. Before I chose the Alpha I bought, he told me to take everything for a test drive that I looked at. In conclusion, it seems a great place to go if you know what you want and if you are looking for a decent priced, solid bike to ride.
Awesome bike shop, awesome owner and great quality and great prices. I stopped in to look for a new bike and left with an amazing machine. Jeff got me fitted for the perfect bike and took his time to educate me how everything even though he was trying to close up. I did see alot of people on here saying he is racist but idk about that.... a black male was came into the shop after he had closed looking for a bike for minimal money and Jeff set him up with a bike and was didn't treat him any differently than me. Regardless of any of that stuff I would recommend this place to anyone.
