Definitely visit the local conservation center in downtown Gerlach. Just 79 residents live here, but with a ton of heart to protect the natural surroundings. If you have a few hours to spare, schedule a tour of nearby Fly Ranch led by Michael and Sarah. You can also learn all about the Burning Man Project. Great guides. Lots of trail necessities. Support local nature preservation!
