Gotham Divers

About

Gotham Divers is a full-service SCUBA dive shop in Manhattan. We offer training, gear, gas fills and dive trips to divers of all levels. Come dive with us!

Story

Our story began many years ago when Alex Barnard and Tim Hughes decided to take the Open Water SCUBA diving course. They both discovered a passion for SCUBA and continued to train intensively in the field. After years dedicated to honing their skills as divers and dive instructors, they decided to take their love for SCUBA to a new level, and opened Gotham Divers.

Gotham Divers provides training and certification for all levels of SCUBA, from Open Water to Trimix, and everything in between. The Open Water I and Refresher courses are held in our Lower East Side swimming pool, and our Open Water II and specialty trainings are held in a nearby quarry. Tech training dives are held in the quarry, and out in the ocean.

Gotham Divers is a full service SCUBA shop, offering a wide range of recreational and technical gear. We are dealers for manufacturers such as DUI, Henderson, Mares, Cressi, Zeagle, XS Scuba, Bare, Oceanic, and, we are the only Halcyon dealer in NYC! In addition to offering gear sales and rentals, we also provide gear repair and servicing.

Gotham Divers offers clean, pure, and accurate gas fills, including air, custom and standard Nitrox and Trimix blends, O2, and Argon. We provide tank sales and rentals, as well as VIP and Hydro servicing.

Gotham Divers organizes day and weekend trips every weekend throughout our local dive season, from April through November. Training happens mostly at Dutch Springs where we dive, BBQ and camp out overnight. We have regular charters on local dive boats to nearby shipwrecks in the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and other salty sites. Gotham Divers also offers dive vacations to tropical destinations such as the Florida Keys, Mexico, and Cave Country.

We created Gotham Divers with the goal of providing a place for learning, adventure, and community. Friendly gatherings, both in the store and “at sea”, are our thing. We hope you come hang with us, and DIVE with us soon!

Gotham divers is fantastic place to start your dive certification. They are very friendly and accommodating. Edwin Moreno is a top notch dive instructor. He will make sure that you understand everything, so that you are safe and ready for open water. I did have some issues with my techniques, but Edwin patiently coached me till I got what needs to be done.
Tim and team were very professional and super good folks. Had a family of 3 get certified with open water certification. The team was terrific. We were very, very prepared and passed our open water dives in Florida with ease. We learned a tremendous amount and felt very confident diving. We all plan to go back to Gotham for advanced diving classes in the future. Really enjoyed the team.
Took their open water dive course; first half was classroom and second part was in the pool. Highly recommend using them for your certifications. Highly knowledgeable and great teachers. Tim the owner was great at scheduling and very accommodating; highly responsive to emails. I struggled with the pool part and the breathing and the instructor Edwin was a great help; advised i just come in the pool take it at my own pace and do what i as conformable with. Everybody needs to take it at their own pace. In the beginning i didn't think i could ever breath consistently through a mouthpiece but by the end of the class i found it very easy. I will be going back to re-do my confined pool section but there is no way i would be even thinking about scuba still had it not been for Edwin. Highly highly recommend.
I came in to do my confined open water dives before heading off to finish my certification on location. Gokse was an incredible instructor and the entire staff was so professional and helpful through the scheduling, classroom, and in-pool training process. I had one diving experience before, but after leaving this class I feel so much more confident about diving in open water and continuing with more advanced certifications! As someone who lives in Manhattan, being able to do the pool training in Manhattan was also very convenient.
I really enjoyed my time at Gotham divers. Gokse is a great instructor. I had no problem absorbing hours of information. His demonstrations are clear and he will answer all the questions. Thank you Edwin as well for grading and demonstrating. True professionals.
Took the Reactivate course with Gotham Divers. Great service from Tim and good, very comprehensive refresher in the pool with the instructors.
I signed up with Gotham to do my pool dives before going out on referral dives. Throughout the process of getting my paperwork sorted out, they were fantastic and communicative. The instruction I received was excellent. When I went on vacation and did my qualifying dives with my partner, our dive instructor said that we had been really well trained, and that a lot of his referrals generally do not show up so well prepared - I put it all down to Gotham, and their great team
I completed my Open Water certification this past summer, and it was a remarkable experience. As a seasoned teacher, I can immediately identify the folks at Gotham Divers as people with an emphasis on strong pedagogy and safety all wrapped up in a personalized experience. It simply does not get much better. They communicate well, and often focus on a conversation to better understand one's goals as well as comfort level. By understanding goals, they are better aimed with recommending the proper equipment. This is always a delicate balance because Scuba has many safety considerations, and as mentioned Gotham Divers has a strong emphasis on safety; however, the shop sells Scuba equipment that is a necessity for class or continued diving. Through understanding of goals, the folks at Gotham Divers do not push unnecessary equipment. As a matter of fact, they are very frank when some equipment is not needed for either a beginner or for a specific diving environment. For example, if you plan on diving exclusively in tropical waters, then they are not going to recommend a thick wetsuit. One of my goals for completing the Open Water certification was to prepare and develop a program for my high school students where they will be working with a research scientist on a reef restoration project. I recently had the Gotham Divers certify several of my students, and again, the experience was second-to-none. My students had a range of abilities and comfort with water, and with patience and a personalized touch, all students finished with their certification. They had a great sense of accomplishment and they cannot wait for the next part of their experience.
