Great Northern Bicycles

About

We love bicycles and no matter what you ride-we'll help keep you rollin'!

Story

Island Park Cycles was originally started in 1987 by Tom Smith. Today Island Park Cycles is more commonly known at Great Northern Bicycle Company (because of where the shop is now located...The Great Northern Depot, which was once the city's train station as well as an eatery/brewery). The shop is still owned and run by Tom (though with his wife Kari and Aaron Romaine). In 2017 we celebrated our 30th year as Fargo-Moorhead's one stop bicycling shop!

"We are a locally owned bike shop located in the historic Great Northern Railway depot in downtown Fargo, ND. Our store first opened its doors in 1987 and we've been going strong ever since. Our collective passion for cycling is what drives us to deliver the best experience in town when it comes to shopping for a new bike or repairing your old one. We have a full service bicycle repair shop and stick by our standard two day turnaround time for most service jobs. We also carry many of the top brands in cycling and have a knowledgeable team ready to assist you with any questions you may have. Ride on!"

I bought a bike here not too long ago & the gears were making grinding/clicking noises right away. The bike came with a service plan, so I brought it back to get serviced & take care of the noises. Was told nothing was wrong with it & that certain gears just make noise. Sure, that makes sense for the lowest & highest gears, but not for 4 or 5 of them. They refused to address the issue. So I brought the bike to Scheels in Moorhead & paid to get it serviced. Not only does the bike ride perfectly now, but every single gear works quietly. Every single gear. I try to support local businesses, but wasn’t the slightest bit impressed with the technician at GNBC.
This place is the best! Like seriously. Great staff. Great selection. Great daily espresso if you come at the right time. Love this bike store. I will always use them.
They go above and beyond every time I go in there. Went in for my daughter’s flat tire. They fixed it on the spot. Came out 10min later with a fully tuned up bike at no charge to me. They wanted to make sure she had the best riding experience.
I’ve been here a few times. They are always friendly, prices are reasonable and repairs are fast. Other places in town can fix your bike in weeks but not these guys and gals. Both times I’ve been in, the fix was a 2 hour ordeal in and out . I highly recommend.
Great service!!! They said it would be a couple days and it was a couple hours!! I have had them service my bike twice now and it has been amazing both times! 10 out of 10 would recommend
I have brought bike parts in numerous times for repairs that are out of my scope of being an at home mechanic. I have received nothing but professional respect and overall great service from the gentleman in the shop. Their services are quick and EXTREMELY fair priced almost a little underpriced if your ask me. Highly recommend this shop!
Always treated well and twice they have fixed my bikes when I just dropped in which is amazing. Definitely the place in town to get a road bike and they are getting more diverse brands and moving away from just specialized. Try out an on the house espresso shot at 3 pm! Very tasty. Group rides start at 6. More laid back Tuesday, little more spicy Wednesday.
Friendly and helpful staff when it comes to repairs and looking for a good fit for your next bike.
I walked into Great Northern Bike this week, needed some fenders installed on my bike. Everyone, I mean everyone was super friendly and helpful. I asked my question in morning, brought bike in at noon, was done by 2:30. Got a text that is was ready to roll. Walked over, got bike, they gave me a free espresso shot and I was on my way. Not everyday I have an awesome experience like that, and I want everyone to know.
Steve who worked there was great, told all sorts if stuff about the shop and area. Cant wait for a streets alive event. I'm hoping to join him on the 5 person custom built bike. I'll be wearing my Bike Fargo shirt proudly.
