Greenpoint Reformed Church is a congregation whose roots stretch down into Brooklyn’s industrial, immigrant past and branch up into a present day community that deeply values open hearts and open doors. We are a Christian church that sees doubt as fundamental to faith and tradition as an open invitation to creative innovation. We gather together each Sunday morning to ask questions, wrestle with answers, celebrate one another’s joys, mourn each other’s sorrows, and figure out together how we are to love God and our neighbors this week. Our handbell choir, gospel choir and lively band is the joyful noise that animates our Sundays together. During the week, we try to keep the lights on and the doors open as much as possible, hosting our neighbors for a community meal, distributing food at our pantry and growing vegetables in the backyard, welcoming neighborhood meetings, musical groups, people in recovery, and folks just wandering by into our building and our communal life. Many of us have experienced churches that closed their doors to people like us: we were too poor, too queer, too skeptical, too much. Our hope as a congregation is that we might reflect God’s universal love by opening our doors and our hearts and say, “you are welcome here.”
