I walked in an hour and a half before closing without an appointment and Toshi happily seated me. I don’t speak Japanese but we communicated just fine. He made suggestions for my hair cut and it came out great!

I went through a phase where I completely destroyed my hair when I bleached it approximately 8 times on my own and without the knowledge that olaplex ever existed, but it has taken me 5 years to grow out my natural hair. I was in need of a haircut and there wasn’t a stylist I was committed to…. until now I showed Tenzin a few pictures of what kind of cut I wanted. Basically I was going for the curtain bangs and semi long layered look. He asked if I wanted an olaplex treatment and I immediately said yes because I know the miracle it can create. I am SO HAPPY with my haircut! Tenzin took his time and checked in with me during the entire process. He’s a true artist and I’m so glad I made an appointment here on a whim! I've been going to downtown location for over 10 years but sadly they are closed permanently so I went to this branch. I got a senior stylist $$ but my hair turned out to be choppy and he cut my hair in about 10minutes, not at all carefully/detailed. It felt like a $25 haircut. After I went home I see some random hair strands sticking out so I had to cut them myself. He and the rest of the staff were very friendly as expected from Hairmates.

Don’t be fooled by the humble little studio and location, the price to quality ratio is incredible. My brother got his haircut here and was impressed with the patience and skill of the lady that cut his hair. She was attentive and listened as he described the style he wanted. Highly recommend it for guys wanting a fresh cut.

I walked into the salon without an appointment and Natsume, my stylist, was really great. He was professional and very attentive. Beware, this is a no frills place, but the cut I received was top notch. I waited to write this post to see how my hair looks on a daily basis without professional styling. I can tell my cut will grow out nicely. That is the measure of a great hair cut. Will definitely be going back to Natsume! And, the green tea they offer is fabulous.

I'm sorry. I'm going to be rude here. I used to enjoy HairMates a lot, both East Village & Midtown store. As usual this time, I walked in without booking an stylist, but I did request a senior stylist. Then Toshi appeared. I have to say he didn't look like someone who does woman's hair, . The way he cuts my hair feels inexperienced comparing to any of my previous experiences, and he definitely doesn't know how to blow dry a woman's hair, I can even do better than that... After wash my hair one day later, I feel even worse now. The ends of my hair are not even, they look like dog bitten or a kid's job... And what's even worse is that, the moment I started to googling the hairmate review, I noticed that the usual cut is $70, where I was charged $73 pre-tip, and being informed that this is a 15% off price. I'm sorry, this haircut is just not worth $85. And I have to spend another $80 to fix it. Ladies, please think twice, and make sure you find your right stylist, not Toshi. We all know what a bad hair can do to us.

Amazing hair cut and reasonably priced $50. Cash only. They do both men and women. I'd recommend seeing Masa but all are skilled. I've also been here for a Head Spa $30 which is basically a 45 minute spa for your scalp and hair. I would highly recommend this treatment if you are in between trims and your hair/scalp needs a refresh. Also includes an invigorating scalp massage.
