Hatoya Mart Japanese Food Grocery

This is one of Charlotte's only true Japanese grocery stores that I can think of. It is not really an Asian market so to speak but truly a dedicated Japanese grocery store. The young lady or gentleman who work the front register speak very little English however they are the most helpful and friendly people that you will ever encounter in a retail store trying to help you the best that they possibly can. If you are looking for something also such as a Japanese type gift or Japanese candy it possibly can be found here if not at your local Asian market you can also get Japanese DVD movies here to rent. Anytime I am in the area I always stop in just to walk around even if I only buy a few packages of soup in a bunch of different packages of candies because they are so friendly when you walk in I absolutely love it.

Update to previous review: Hatoya has moved just a few doors down to a larger and more inviting location. Product selection and variety have expanded. After becoming more familiar with the store, it is easy to avoid the overpriced products. The overpriced products are mostly things like Japanese Kit-Kats which might tend to draw consumers to the store who aren't interested in purchasing much else. Produce selection and prices are excellent. I enjoy trying to prepare authentic Japanese foods, and Hatoya carries every obscure ingredient you can imagine. Upgraded my review from three to four stars. Staff are always very gracious, polite and thankful for the business. Varied selection of authentic Japanese products. Staff is always friendly and attentive. Prices, however, border on gouging. Other Asian markets in the area carry similar/same products for lower prices. In some cases you can even find the same products at large chain stores now for a fraction of Hatoya's prices. A small selection of Japanese novelties, kitchen, and beauty products rounds out the inventory. You should visit if you're interested in Japanese culture.

In need of any Japanese specialty food item? This is the store for you! Helpful staff great selection. Hatoya also carries other Asian food items.

I love this store, I went for the first time today and I was super excited. The lady up front made me an origami flower too! 💖
