Really kind people work here. Its refreshing to hear music in any setting. Very very good variety of snacks and tobacco and soda. Very clean and cared for.
Some reviews and reviewer's are interesting and make you really think about where people are at in awareness. One issue I notice is how many people do not seem to realize where this market is located, It is in old town/chinatown. An unfortunate area with very unique issues today. Please take a moment and try to imagine and realize this! Could you possibly imagine the amount of issues the employees and the owner might face? Imagine the amount of theft that could effect prices and profit? Imagine the amount of mental health issues and behavioral issues these people must face on any day? Realize the fact that they have been open during the whole pandemic while other business have closed . I have watched cashiers in this store deal with mental health issues from customers that would make an average person struggle and most of the time they do it with a professional attitude. When we look at the issues of running a business in old town today. It is logical that polices and attitudes would be different from other businesses in other areas of town? So i want to commend the employees of Helens Market for being kind, professional and trying to provide a good experience despite the tremendous issues they must face. To complain about not being able to swipe cards or other small things in light of the issues faced by residents and businesses owners of old town says more about the people making the reviews then anything else.
The $13.00 Marlboro cigarettes are old and taste rotten.
The owner of this store has implemented an extremely suspicious “policy” of bullying customers into handing him their card instead of using the contactless payment option which his hardware supports. DO NOT SHOP HERE, THIS IS INSECURE AND ILLEGAL.
The price gouging is shameful, especially being in an area where everyone is poor and struggling to get by. I've lived in this neighborhood for years and watched pricess sky rocket in the last couple of years. That being said, Lexie is the best, working that register in a frenzy, friendly and professional! Robert too is an amazing asset to the store, quick, efficient and friendly. I don't know the other guys name who is there most mornings, he's quiet, but is also very friendly and professional. The owner is very fortunate to have these fine, honest, hard working people working for him, especially considering the type of people that walk through those doors at any given time! And whatever they're getting paid is not nearly enough for what they endure day in and day out!
I went in to get a USB-C cable, but they didn't have one. I was about to walk out and the lady at the counter pulled one out of her purse and gave it to me, she was super nice!
It's definitely a "convenience" store in the most traditional sense. They have all the usual food, snacks, drinks, smokes, over the counter meds, basic household and automotive items, etc. Employees are always nice. Some of the people hanging around the area can seem a little sketchy homeless, transitional housing residents, etc but I really haven't experienced much pan-handling in the area or anything like that.
No Red Bull deals, no soda deals. Everything's excessively marked up. High cost store. Buyer beware
Been going to this market almost every week day for 5 years, was gone for 5 months and now a two for 1.00 or .59 for one item is now 1.00. I will not be a patron to this ripping off the disadvantaged population. Most staff has always been kind and friendly.
The Night Girl Lexie is amazing. She always talks to everyone. Sure the people hanging out around arent the best but look at the area. There is nothing the store can do. It's always clean and Lexie always gets thru the long line very fast. I would highly recommend
