Founded in 2017, Iowa Stage Theatre Company is a non-profit theatre organization based in Des Moines, IA.
The heritage of the Iowa Stage Theatre Company goes back nearly 70 years. In the late 1940s, The Drama Workshop was formed to become Des Moines second community theater. It purpose was to provide patrons more cutting edge productions (such as Arthur Miller) versus what you would find performed in other local theaters.
Over the years, several members of the Drama Workshop felt that the play selection had become too "mainstream", so they decided to create their own progressive company called StageWest Theatre Co. Within a few years after that, it was decided that the Drama Workshop would close and the assets remaining would be gifted to a new company being developed - Repertory Theatre of Iowa.
Over time, each of the two new companies (RTI and StageWest) would become known for producing outstanding classical and contemporary theatre in Des Moines. In fact, a November 2016 survey of 250 Des Moines theatre goers rated RTI and StageWest among the top three companies for live theatre, along with the historic Des Moines Playhouse.
In early 2015, RTI and StageWest began to explore the possibly of uniting, because we realized that we can accomplish more together than apart. Each company understood the important role that theatre plays in the lives and social fabric of our community. We wanted to bring professional theatre to more people and offer a diverse body of work that motivates people to come back for more. Naturally, coming together created efficiencies that allowed us to accomplish these goals more cost-effectively.
And so it was that in early 2017, Iowa Stage Theatre Company was formed. We will be producing a season that you will not want to miss... its more than RTI... its more than StageWest... its a unique theatre experience.
