Kershaw-Ryan State Park

Story

Kershaw–Ryan State Park is a public recreation area on Nevada State Route 317, south of the town of Caliente, Nevada. The state park covers at the northern end of Rainbow Canyon in an area that was homesteaded in 1873.HistoryThe canyon was settled in 1873 by Samuel and Hannah Kershaw, who operated a ranch called the Meadow Valley Wash Ranch. In 1904, they sold the property to rancher James Ryan, who donated the land to the state in 1926 to be a public park. The Civilian Conservation Corps developed visitor amenities in 1934, and Kershaw–Ryan State Park was officially established as one of Nevada's first four state parks the following year. A flash flood in 1984 destroyed most of the park's facilities, including the stone caretaker's cabin built by the CCC. After rebuilding and redesign, the park reopened in 1997.Activities and amenitiesThe park offers camping, picnicking, and a group-use area. Hikers can explore the 1.5mi Canyon Overlook Trail and shorter Rattlesnake Loop.

we set our tents in this park while traveling North along the eastern border of NV. 15 spots in this campground (10 w/electric- 5 without) Pay showers. Very clean park. The next morning we drove to the top of the canyon to hike some of the trails. At the top parking lot we found a very nice picnic/playground area. Trails were pretty well marked out. I highly recommend this park

Oasis in a rather Arid part of Nevada. At the "top" of the road there is a very green area with green grass, a wading pond, picnic trails, etc. This area is very nice and we'll kept. We also walked the overlook trail, which was a nice loop through the Arid section just outside this most verdent valley.

A beautiful park that not many others know about. There are some really great hiking trails that are easy to walk. There is a picnic area, an area with playground equipment for the kids to play, as well as a place to camp. The park staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, as well as ready to help and answer any questions. A great place to visit for a day or for a weekend of camping.

Great NV State Park! There are fruit trees (apricot, cherry, wild grapes), a wading pool, campsites, volleyball, horseshoes, and some short hiking trails. It's a literal oasis in the desert! You can also arrange a tour of the Elgin Schoolhouse, about half an hour up the road, through the Kershaw-Ryan rangers.
