They have really gone downhill in the past few years. Super dry. The red has a puréed mush that does not resemble meat but more like retried beans. The green tamales are ok. Masa is super dry. Workers are not friendly - at all and still want to be tipped. And pretty pricey too. If you want some delicious tamales I recommend La Casita
I live a few blocks away and this is a great place to get your masa, tortillas, and any other Mexican foods, you desire. The staff is always very friendly.. I normally get a mix of red and green tamales with a pint of beans in a pint of chili. I also buy their masa to make my own tortillas. Great place.m!
Came back for the first time in years and picked up some tamales, chips, and salsa. There’s something abt Popular’s tamales that is unique. Almost like al dente noodles, they are super firm which gives a satisfying bite to sink in to. YUM! The chips are very sturdy, great for dipping and the salsa is refreshing with respectable spice. The only thing keeping this from a five-star review are the high prices, but I get that this area, just like many in Denver is getting pricier. The price of being Popular.
My family has been getting Tamales here for 40years, use to be the best tamales in Colorado. I bought 2dozen yesterday and was very disappointed. Very Dry, very little meat , little flavor and cost more then ever. Ok I can live with price being more and same quality but not higher cost and less product/less quality. This may be the last time I buy from here unless something improves.
Really nice people working, great breakfast burrito. Didn’t love the cookie or the apple dessert, but would happily eat more breakfast burritos.
Checked website for friend going to Denver. I am 70 years old and I recommended this landmark remembering my visits as child eating the best tamales ever on the back seat of my parents '54 Pontiac. We lived 50 miles away and we did this 2x/mo. It was our Sunday family drive and the treat was this extrodinary place. I live in AZ now and flooded with Mexican. Have yet to find one that compares to La Popular. None.
I’ve been going to La Popular for 40 years. I hadn’t been there for sometime and went in today to buy a dozen tamales and paid $19. They are half the size and the filling was mushy. I was looking forward to the traditional tamale and left very disappointed. I will not go back
Awesome tamales! Take out only. Got both red and green pork—can’t decide which I like better. A dozen for about $20 with tip. Can’t beat that. They also have a lot of baked treats. Small shop. Spanish-language soap opera on the tv.
I have been buying tamales from this location for several years. The flavor is just unbelievable, my favorite is the green chili tamale it has a little bite, spice to it! Enjoy! CAB
I came to Denver for a day trip and was recommended this place by someone in a store next door. I got their breakfast burrito, and it was amazing! I loved it. Spicy and quick. The prices were great, and I also snagged a loaf of sweet bread on my way our! Would definitely recommend!
