I found made institute about a year ago, when it was Made studios. I was looking for a program that would gave me a career as a skilled costume designer. Before made I was a self taught costume designer with great ideas and concepts but needed help with execution.
I did my research other programs in the area. I wanted a program that taught hands on skills and technology based classes. Their designer development program had everything I was looking for Pattern making, hand sewing, machine sewing, seam finishes, garment construction, illustrations, photo shop, illustrator, and business classes.
But more importantly it is owned by a passionate and knowledge owner, Rachel Ford. Rachel knows her craft. I have seen staff members take beginner and self taught sewing and drawing enthusiasts and made them into professionals who take pride in their workmanship. Before Made institute I had little gigs here and there now. I am confident skilled draper that has constant work.
If your looking to take the fashion world by a storm go to Made institute...

After researching the various introductory sewing courses in the area, I decided go with MADE based on the positive reviews and intimate classroom environment. I registered for Sewing 101 this spring and was very excited to improve my skills. The first lesson covered the basics of using the machine and subsequent lessons covered the skills we would need to construct a basic tank. The subsequent lessons are where things fell apart for me. The class was overbooked so I ended up sharing machines with the instructor. This meant I had less time in comparison to other students to work on my projects and constantly felt rushed because the instructor needed to get to the next class demonstration. Bringing my own machine was not an option as the studio is so small there was no place to set it up. The overbooked class really diminished my experience. Instead of learning to sew most of time was spent sitting at a table contemplating what I could have done with the money I spent

Where do I begin… I stumbled upon this lovely gem MADE while looking for beginner sewing classes online. I intended initially just to take one or two introductory classes because I needed to get started using the sewing machine I had purchased over a year prior but hadn’t touched. I had always wanted to design and sew but pushed it aside. When I found the website I was intrigued, so I signed up for a class and a workshop (trip to NYC to learn about fabrics and fabric shopping). Once I went to class I fell in love with everything about MADE and have since continued taking classes and workshops. The environment is warm and fun, the staff and instructors are very knowledgeable and genuinely helpful, and the students are amazing people (all friendly and supportive).
At first glance you may think the prices are a little high compared to some other local “classes” offered but it’s more than worth it when you are gaining the type of skill and techniques (old school, high-end, couture techniques) they have to offer compared to other places, not to mention the equipment and studio space available at MADE. It’s Real fashion education and opportunity for incredibly reasonable prices compared to universities and the likes.
Being at MADE is always inspiring and exciting, whether it’s for a class, a workshop, open studio, working on a project, or just talking about ideas. Whether you are a beginner who has never touched a sewing machine or someone who needs to hone existing skills or learn other facets of the industry (business, illustration, pattern-making, etc.) if you have a love for fashion and an interest to learn, MADE is definitely where you want to be. Rachel (the founder) is always so inspiring and gracious. She is very hands on and makes a real effort.
I am so happy to be a part of MADE. It’s inspired me to dream bigger and go farther than I initially planned when signing up for a basic sewing course. Once I complete the Designer Development program I'll continue to be a part of the MADE family. I feel like it is such a movement for the fashion community in Philadelphia. Lastly, while I love the cozy atmosphere of the current location I am super excited for the new space (coming soon).
