As a former graduate of Manning beauty when still in DT Vancouver I decided to give them a shot at a haircut at their location on MacArthur Blvd.. I called to make an appointment for 430 and was told "sorry we dont make appointments for after 5, walk in only" I replied no I need 4;30, still same reply. I went in on my way home from work, went in and had to wait for close to 5 minutes before the girl came to the front, said do you need something? I said a cut. She asked my name and said it will be just a second, well 15 minutes later I was approached by the student, whom asked for the wrong name even though I spelled it out for the girl. I was taken to the station which appears to be a a long cabinet, with beat up black paint, electri is under the counter so student has to get in front of you and lean under to plug anything in, I noticed the strong smell of cleaning agents, this was not a good experience all while listen to spanish music, some students just sitting on their phones, Students with hoodies on completely covering their faces attempting to cut the hair on a mannequin head, could not even tell whom was a student, instructor or patron. Some students wearing blue jeans, slumped below the butt showing the boxers, no professionalism in dress code at all. Student asked how I wanted the cut, I explained in detail as being an ex hairstylist and specific lengths that need to be left, well as I was put in the chair, student tried to pump up the chair, oops, chair dosent work, so no raising to a level the student could easily start the cut, I was sprayed with the cold water and combed through, the cut was started but I could not see as I was turned from the mirror. When I was done the student asked for a hair cut check, a very young man walked up, NEVER touched a comb or my hair and said" no lines, looks good" and walked off Student asked me how I liked it and i said NOT AT ALL WHAT I ASKED FOR and WAY TOO SHORT, I was left with hair 1/2" long on a cowlick I specifically said that area need to be left a bit longer, this was possible as my hair was about 3 1/2" long. I asked for 1 to 1 1/2" to be cut, well I was left with a little over 1 1/2" in length, NOT HAPPY! The cutting cape was removed and told you are all done. I asked for some product as now my hair was looking like I had been through a hurricane, I was told they do not have any ! So I was forced to go to the front and pay, I again encountered the same girl after waiting this time nearly 10 minutes for her to come to the front counter as she was to engaged in joking and chatting with other students. Once she approached the counter I presented my card for payment, I was told the cost for a cut was 10.00, well I was charged 10.50 , after looking at my bank account this morning ! After she ran my card I was informed they had no paper in the machine so I would not be able to have a receipt. The building is in disrepair, floors are worn out, stations are a pure disgrace as are the styling chairs. This is NOT the school Jerry Manning worked so long and hard to make good, this school is a complete joke and not worth the $$ to ever return. If you value your hair , DO NOT GO HERE, If you want a specific length or cut, DO NOT GO HERE, If you want professionalism, DO NOT GO HERE, If you want an observant staff overseeing the cuts or services, DO NOT GO HERE. Lastly, signs state no cell phone use, well all 3 of the students in the manicure area were on their cell phones, talking and laughing, obviously the management nor instructors take professional training seriously let alone rules for students. I went with full knowledge of a student would be cutting my hair and am aware they need people to practice the trade they are learning is why I choose to go in, after this experience I will NEVER return and will happily pay much more for a professional in a real salon with real trained stylist. This cut I have will have to wait at least 2 weeks so I can go have it fixed.
I enrolled in Manning Academy School of Beauty Vancouver Campus in March. Manning Academy only has one location/campus. The school was originally owned by the current owner’s father of whom had made a great reputation for the school. Jeff Manning the current owner is using a reputation that is not his own. His website sells you an education based on the way the former owners ran the school. The instructors listed on the website are also not working at the school. Their website also promotes false structure. I spent the first two months sitting in a classroom waiting for an instructor. They had one or two instructors to run the school. Jeff the owner would leave for hours. If our instructor did come to our classroom it was to tell us what to practice and read and then leave us again for hours. On a regular basis we would run out of important supplies color, developer, laundry soap, toilet paper, etc. When it came to servicing our clients if I needed help or wasn’t experienced our client would be taken away and given to a student that knew how to do the service. While I was servicing the client I needed help finishing the style when I asked for help the instructor Susan told me she didn’t know how to do updos. A student that sat next to me ended up instructing me. The school was closed and reopened and have been through a few different instructors. The instructors/staff that were working there during my time of enrollment, which was from March to July, were never supportive. In fact, they actually talked bad about people within the school. They were never on the same page which made it very difficult to learn. There is no structure or curriculum within any of their programs they offer. The times the instructors would perform a demo of something that they enjoyed doing we would just watch with no practice or proof that we actually learned anything. If we did have theory it was never a scheduled routine. If we ever did get a worksheet or a quiz we never had the right book to find the answers. When we would tell the instructors that it was impossible to find the answers she would disagree and tell us to be quiet. When the whole school said the same thing the instructor finally agreed. As for my kit I paid for which cost me 630. My kit included 2 mannequin heads, books, shears, and thinning shears. When asked what I would use to take my state board test I was told I could rent one for 150. My kit should have never cost 630. Jeff let me know that my kit cost that much because I was paying for back bar shampoo and conditioner and towels which I have never heard of a school charging for back bar. My tuition cost was 6,400 which I paid in full. After two months of school I met with Jeff Manning and let him know my concerns lack of structure and the points I have stated above. But things never got better. At many times there were not enough instructors for students. When I decided to drop from Manning Academy I was given a refund calculation. Jeff let me know that since I had been in his program for as long as I was he was to obtain over 5,000 of my money. I expressed to him that my schooling I received did not equal that much money he was to keep, due to the contract I signed it seemed I had no choice but to let him win. Since dropping in July I have now enrolled in another school Elite School of Beauty and am much happier. I have realized though that now I paid 630 to Manning Academy for a kit that was short of so many things, and have now purchased all new supplies I actually needed to finish my education. I feel as though Jeff tries to keep students enrolled as long he can knowing that they will owe him more money. He does not care about his students. I want to warn future cosmetologists to not give Jeff Manning your money. If you want the education that was passed down from Mr. Manning and Mrs. Manning it's at Elite school of beauty. Debbie their daughter and Nicole th grandaughter take pride in their school and are passionate about their students.
Is there a way to leave a review without clicking one single star? Worst place ever. HORRID owners. Jeff manning is dishonest and a scam artist, along with his wife Amy. The school itself is beyond unorganized and financially unstable. I attended the esthetics program at Manning Acadamy. After we realized our instructor was not getting paid on time, or only partial payments and got fired for defending herself and for her husband RESPECTFULLY AND THERE ARE WITNESSES, confronted Jeff as well. We the students become concerned about where we stood with our hours and education as well as where our tuition money was going if he couldn't pay his employees, Come to find out it was multiple employees. At that point he brought in his wife Amy to teach after we had a full day in between with no instructor, we had "study time". She came in and assigned us each a part of the chapter to read and then we would teach the rest of the class. Bogus, and it's only day 1. So we walked out to go talk to Jeff. Again with witnesses basically the rest of the school left for the day we calmly and respectfully asked him to explain what was happening and a chance to explain our concerns and why we were upset. Jeff ended up getting heated and walking away saying he couldn't talk with us anymore multiple times. You couldn't even get the owner to sit and be straight with you. I'm paying money and a lot of it I demand answers. He and his wife refuse to speak to any of us as a group and insist on doing it individually. We refused to go in and allow 3 people to continue the way they were treating us with no support not to mention it wasn't fair. After days of drama and this last encounter with the group and Jeff he and his wife decided to end the program. After we asked for a written statement and provided one stating we were hostile and terminated. He agreed to a hand out refunds by December 1st and failed to keep his word. I and numerous other girls have tried to contact him and see him in person and each time he's "at the bank " or no body knows where he is. Yeah we never knew where the owner/instructor was or when he would show including staff, nice right. At this point eat my money, but I hope that nobody else trusts Jeff Manning. Portland beauty school is amazing. They are competency based which is a lot better if you do you're research unlike meshame on me!!. Call them before you get stuck in this mess!
Very disappointed with Manning's. I had a bad experience a while back and decided to give them a second chance. I do not think the student knew what she was doing. Odviously this is a direct reflection on the school and their instructors. If you're looking to get your hair done or wanting to go to beauty school then I would recommend you look somewhere else.
I Brenda Clausen Fitzer Now had two students Brenda and Marissa do my hair and make-up for my wedding . They gave me a free trial run before to see what I wanted for my wedding. I asked for some changes right before the wedding not only did they drive to the wedding site they did an amazing job! It was everything I asked for a reasonable price! Highly recommend them for any wedding! Thank you girls for making me look and feel beautiful for my special day!
Manning Academy is one of the best beauty schools in Vancouver. The school offers a variety of programs including cosmetology, esthetics and barbering. The school is filled with amazing instructors and many talented students. The school has a very friendly, clean, professional atmosphere. The students always strive to do their best to give their clients what they are looking for. They have their experienced instructors there to help guide them, and to ensure that the clients are comfortable and leave happy. I personally love being a student here. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in school in the beauty industry, or anyone looking to get any beauty service done.
Okay my horrible experience started two weeks prior before even going into the school. I called in to make an appointment and was hung up on in mid sentence, I called again and finally was able to make an appointment that was two weeks away. After waiting two weeks I get to the school and I get told there was never an appointment made for me, so after waiting two weeks I get told they never made the appointment. Finally after arguing with the girl at the front desk they were able to find a student to do my perm, it took three and a half hours for her to do it and when she put the chemicals on she ended up burning my forehead and now it is all red. Finally after three and a half hours I finally get to see my perm and its not at all what I wanted! Half of my hair was still straight! and after expressing to her that half of my hair was straight and it wasn't what I wanted she tried to tell me that its supposed to do that and it will curl up more later. Which is NOT true I have had two perms previously and none of my experiences have been this horrible. I strongly suggest to never go here for your hair of wanting to be a student.!
This place must be ran by new owners. My wife has been going here for 4 years because there is some type of shine they use to color hair and she always brought her daughter. Apparently they changed the policy where you cant bring your child with you. The receptionist was very very rude and hung up on my wife not once but twice. She asked to speak to the supervisor and he apologized and asked her to come in. When she got there she was advised that her and her daughter could get the haircut but to color she needed to leave. Because it was their new policy. What a waste of time driving all the way over there. Oh well lesson learned maybe we shouldnt be so cheap lol because the hair cuts are not so hot anyways
Horrible experience. I asked for an A Line haircut and received a butchered mullet instead. The instructor said there was a miscommunication between me and the student. They offered to fix it. I denied and said you are no longer touching my hair. This student, as a senior, had not a clue on what she was doing. Absolutely horrible.
As a woman who values my appearance i.e.: my hair, fingernails, & skin health, Manning Academy allows my frugal budget to provide me high quality beauty care at modest prices :o * I have GEL finger nail treatment monthly---LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT---because my nails and cuticles L@@K fabulous, despite I dig deep in my garden to produce prize winning Roses and have an organic vegetable garden. * My hair is foil weaved every 3 months to balance the white sugar grey color that keeps creeping-in with my ash brown hair I am over over 55 years young. AND my student-professional listens to my needs to keep me from looking frumpy with stylish cuts and easy care tips. * AND my BIG TREAT~ is a European facial, MICRO CURRENT to tone saggy skin and neck, and my eye brows shaped in their Spa Skin Care Center a few times a year. I feel pampered, beautiful and rich---even tho' I pinch penny's to spend on having a beautiful yard & garden---it's important to take care of me too even tho' I cannot afford the cost of higher priced Salons or Day Spa's. You can have full confidence in the student professional---THEY ARE NOT NOVICES~ the students spend months gaining knowledge and experience to become advanced professionals before serving customers as a Stylist, Colorist, Esthetician, or Nail Technician. If you're new to receiving services from a student be assured Manning's instructors including Jeff Manning, the owner are superb and very professionally interactive with monitoring and oversight of each student as they've interact with their clients. NOTE: Plan to spend a longer time to receive your selected service at Manning Academy because MULTIPLE INSTRUCTORS WILL COME to give tips on "how to do something more efficiently" or make sure you are pleased with the level of service you are receiving---I am grateful to live in an area with a beauty school where customers like myself benefit from reduced prices on all services AND know they won't leave looking like Orphan Annie.
