Excellent atmosphere and great owners! Food takes a little long but worth the wait!!!
I've received take out here 5 times. Two of the times the food was great! Two other times I found a hair in my food. Another time I don't think I received what I was supposed to get, or else their chicken was super gross that day. The first time I ate here I dined in and the customer service was excellent and so was the food. So I tried doing take-out. It is truly hit-or-miss with these people. So every few months I'll risk it to divvy up from Jet's pizza and harmonies garden, but dam, more often than not I'm disappointed.
I'm really sad about this review. My husband and I have been coming here on and off for about 5 years or so. The food quality sort of goes up and down, but the prices are good so we were okay... After today, I don't think we will go back anymore. The food tasted like they had dumped the curry out of a can and watered it down. It was thin. Like soup. And tasteless. I understand times are tough, but cutting corners by watering down your food? This is our hard earned money. I'm so dissappointed. :. We wanted to support this place because it's local to us...
The place stinks and there wasn't even proper air-conditioning on a hot summer afternoon. I dint understand why the entrance door was deliberately kept open. Chicken gravy items I tried sucked. Nothing but water and color and couple of chicken pieces. The second star was for the egg biryani which was really good. There's a small opening / hole in the ground adjacent to the seating area which is apparently a drainage opening, confirmed by the staff themselves. I heard this place gets more take-out customers but I really wonder why at such a bad, unhygienic place.
This place is one of those places that relies on their captive audience to do business. They have no compelling need to be better than they are because there are literally no other Indian restaurants in the entire city of Detroit. The food is good occasionally, but it's really inconsistent. Sometimes it's actually great but sometimes it's so bad you swear you'll never be back... But you will, because where else will you go to get curry, biryani, naan, and things like that? The place is filthy, and my standards are pretty low... The bathrooms are disgusting, the floors and walls are greasy, they rarely bus tables, and there are food crumbs and stains all over the place. The booths are a mess, there is just no order or cleanliness to anything. They know they make their money on carryout orders and they clearly just don't give a care about their interior experience for dine-in customers. But hey, the chilly dilly chicken is awesome!
Ever since they had change of staff and owner they always get our orders wrong. My co-workers and I always call in and ask for butter chicken with only chicken breast. But its wrong more than half the time!!! I end up throwing half my food away because I dislike dark fatty meat. They can use a little cleaning too. Sadly its the only Indian restaurant in midtown, they would have much better business if they got their orders right, maybe get a better cook. If you ever want good Indian check out the Royal Cuisine in Livonia they have another location Troy, but I love their Livonia location. Also you get both rice and naan for the same price at Maya's, its either one or the other.
This is an excellent, authentic indian restaurant in Midtown. All the dishes we orderee were cooked fresh and very well and staff and service are very nice. The building itself is a little run down, but apparently they will be moving to Woodward and Palmer in the near future
The food has always been superb whenever we eat at Maya's, but the tables and floors are grubby. Our server ignored us for at least 20 mins the last time we were there, and she never cleaned our table. Our napkin dispenser was empty. The food took at least 45 mins to arrive, after waiting 20+ to place our order. The food was ambrosial. The grape leaves were wonderful. The Chicken Tikka Masala is always XLNT, as is their Naan, and such delightful & perfect rice. My BF is always happy with everything he orders - mostly chicken and lamb dishes. Mom loves their Samosas and Pakuras. The bathroom is filthy. They had finally put soap in there, but there was nothing for drying hands. I used my shirt. I suppose the bucket of water in the middle of the floor is for 'flushing' the toilet? O_o Thinking of the state of their kitchen terrifies me, but we've never had problems. No plans to quit going, but I do wish they'd literally clean up their act.
Good in a pinch, when you absolutely must have chicken tikka masala and biryani, and the roads are too bad to drive out to Farmington. Better take away than eat in. The dining area is generally dirty, and the booths are kind of broken and moveable. Great staff.
Tried to change me twice when ordering off EatStreets, claiming they lost my order but I checked bank account and I had been charged. 2 seconds later goes in back and grabs my food.. I thought they lost it tho?? Food is good though.
