I would not recommend working with McGourty Engineering. We were under contract on a home and had him come out to inspect the foundation, as it was an older home. He came out and visually inspected the home and made some recommendations but really nothing above and beyond what our home inspector had already reported. Over the next few days, myself, my realtor, the seller, and a third party contractor to understand the extent of the repair required to the foundation attempted to contact Rob for information. He responded to none of us. I would not work with McGourty engineering again and would not recommend them based on this lack of communication on such an important and timely matter.
I worked with Rob to evaluate moving a support pole in the center of our basement earlier this year. His team was timely and he was incredibly knowledgable and helpful with information during his site walkthrough. We talked through an array of options and went through a few cycles of drawing iterations to get to our final solution which I'm incredibly happy with. Thank you for all of the help and the amazing end result!
Rob has helped many of my clients with structural recommendations while in the process of buying or selling their homes. Today he inspected my personal home and really helped make a huge lurking fear of “foundation issues” become a maintainable and not-so-scary task. He was very thorough and patient while answering all of my questions and gave me specific recommendations on how to improve the overall structure of my house without making unnecessary and costly repairs. I highly recommend McGourty Engineering and will be referring all of my clients to them in the future.
I have hired Susan and Rob on two separate occasions to visit my site and help me with some big engineering questions. Both times I had a great experience. Most recently Rob came to my newly purchased home in Denver and was very friendly and knowledgeable. I appreciated his candor and willingness to spend about two hours answering my questions and explaining and sketching all of the engineering options available to me as I consider what to do next with my unfinished basement. Highly recommended!
I would not use McGourty Engineering. They were recommended by my realtor. When Rob observed a crack in drywall he would not return two calls from my contractor and one call from me so we could get a specific scope of work. He never did return these calls. he states on his voice mail he doesn't check it until the end of the day I ended up paying the contractor for two visits. I received a specific summary 13 days later. They are however very efficient at invoicing! I received an email invoice at 7:38 AM the day he came out and another one at 1:45 PM.
TL:DR If you’re going to buy a house, schedule an appointment with McGourty. It is worth every penny you spend and will give you information that you won’t receive from anyone else in the home buying process. You’re inspector will say “there’s a crack you should have that looked at.” McGourty will tell you if it’s detrimental or not. My girlfriend and I started looking for houses about 9 months back. We finally had an offer accepted and were under contract on a house built in 1958. We had looked at houses on the same block where the floor was 6-9 inches below the foundation walls and had very obvious structural issues. This was one of our biggest concerns on the house that we were under contract on. We knew that the inspector would point out any glaring issues but didn’t have the knowledge to give us the information and peace of mind we needed to move forward. We reached out to McGourty Engineering. The woman on the phone was very nice and was able to schedule someone to come out and take a look at the house. Rob came out to do the inspection and was very professional and on time. He started by giving us information on the area and offered his opinion of house based on the location, soil type, and year the house was built. He then started in the basement and walked us through the type of construction used on the foundation as well as the pros and cons of that type of system. He took measurements and offered strategies for monitoring cracks in the foundation walls. From there, he moved to the main floor of the house and gave us information on load bearing walls and what we could realistically do with the layout of the house without compromising the structure. We had plans for moving some walls that we found were load bearing. Rob offered his opinion on cost effective strategies for supporting the structure while still giving us the look we wanted. Rob then moved outside and took measurements on the walls of the house. He explained every measurement and pointed out roof drainage issues that may affect the foundation. He then moved to the attic and took measurements on the ceiling trusses to verify the information that he had given us. Rob was able to provide us with an honest assessment on the structure of the home and gave us what we needed to move forward with the house and the projects we had in mind. We will be reaching to McGourty again for any structural information or plans we need in the future.
I had Rob come out to my home for a structural inspection of an exterior wall. Rob was very friendly, personable and informative. He explained the likely causes of the problem and specific steps I should take to remedy the issue. He spent time inspecting some previous foundation repairs and a sag in the roof line, which was above and beyond what I had initially contacted McGourty Engineering about. Again, Rob was very thorough in his explanations and gave me very specific reccomendations on how to monitor additional settling and stabilize the the roof. McGourty's experience and professional reccomendations are totally worth the small cost if even for peace of mind. "Crack" and "foundation" are two words homeowners are terrified to hear in the same sentence but Rob helped ease these fears. I'll happily recommend Rob and Susan to anyone in need of structural engineering services.
If you're concerned about a structural problem with your home then I would highly recommend McGourty Engineering. Susan came by our house and walked us through all the areas we were concerned about. She is extremely knowledgeable and gave us tons of valuable advice for a very reasonable price. Most importantly, she's not interested in selling you a large engineering project so she was extremely honest and transparent about what she thought was happening and how we coudl go about fixing it. Definitely hire Susan and McGourty Engineering - you won't regret it.
Here's what happened to me. I was under contract to purchase a home. The inspection came back that I should call an engineer to look at a wall. Rob came out, walked the property and gave me some advice. Basically, he said this is normal for a home of this age, just add some supports, replace some bricks and open a wall to see into an inaccessible crawlspace. He collected his money, said call if I need anything, he would help. Fast forward to this past 30 days. We are experiencing structural issues, cracks in walls appearing and widening. I have called and emailed Rob at least 5 times looking for some assistance, more advice, repair instructions. He is non responsive. Absent. No where to be found. This is how he is treating me. Based upon what I believe to be a lack experience and poor customer support he even took a check, promised to send a receipt and he never did that I will not recommend him or his company. Heed this review.
Susan was very hard to get a hold of. Knowing if she was going to show up was a concern from the beginning. I was unable to meet her for my appointment but she let me know she could do everything on her own. It took me five days to hear from her. She made me pay the bill first, which made me question if she was going to even tell me what she found. I had an urgent matter with a tight time frame. When I finally did get to talk to her, she only talked to me for a few minutes, the conversation was rushed. I paid a lot of money for her to review the structure of my house and felt the money was a waste. When I tried to setup a second time to talk, she provided a time but never showed up or responded to texts/ phone calls to try and reschedule. On top of that, I contacted a different structural engineer and was provided a completely different review of the house. I would highly recommend you do not use this company.
