Medical Bridges ® recovers medical surplus that would otherwise be discarded and redistributes it locally for disaster response, and to hospitals, clinics and healthcare providers in less fortunate countries. Our goal is to bridge the healthcare gap, connecting those who have with those who hope. Each person who receives medical care because of a Medical Bridges ® donation is a testament to the power of giving health and giving hope.
WHERE SURPLUS FINDS PURPOSE
Over $9 billion of medical supplies are discarded each year in the United States. As medical technologies advance, outmoded (but perfectly good) equipment and supplies gather dust in hospital storage rooms across the nation. At the same time, people all over the world are suffering and dying because their community urgently needs these life saving tools.
In 1997 Dr. Patricia Brock decided to do something about the waste. On a medical mission to El Salvador, she was struck by the country’s lack of basic medical supplies. Upon returning to Houston, Dr. Brock, and a group of concerned individuals, established a recycling program to channel unused medical equipment and supplies (everything from MRI machines to bandages) to qualified healthcare providers who desperately needed them. Thus Medical Bridges ® was born.
Medical Bridges ® is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to procuring medical and surgical supplies and equipment for donation to qualified providers of charitable healthcare in developing countries.
