Parent Teacher Cooperative Preschool
Welcome to Metzger Community Preschool!
Located in Tigard, Oregon, Metzger Community Preschool is a parent-cooperative preschool where teacher and parents work together to extend the learning and development of children in a safe, healthful and caring environment.
Our school supports play-based learning interwoven with academic preparation. As children near kindergarten age, academic learning is increased appropriately to ready children for elementary school.
A cooperative preschool is a program that is operated by a group of parents who take an active interest in their children's first educational experience. Parents help the teacher in the classroom, take a committee or Board position outside the classroom, are given opportunities for education, and are involved in decision-making.
This structure allows us to maintain affordable tuition and creates a community in which we participate in our children's education as well as support each other. When you make a commitment to a co-op, both you and your child will enjoy the rewards!
STARS
For children who are 2.5 years of age by September 1st of the school year
9:00-11:30pm Tuesday/Thursday
This class fosters socialization and is often a child’s first introduction to school and routines. We learn to negotiate with our friends while enhancing our verbal communication. We work on self-help skills with emergent independence. The full spectrum of interest centers are open for exploration including science, sensory experiences, art, and fine motor. Our jobs find us checking the weather, singing and moving, adding numbers to our calendar, feeding our fish, caring for our plants, and enjoying a nutritious snack.
ROCKETS
For children who are 3.5-5 years of age by September 1st of the school year
9:00-1:00pm Monday/Wednesday/Friday
This class learns through direct interactive experiences based on our children’s characteristics. They learn extraordinary amounts through play and exploration. They develop cognitive concepts such as solving problems, learning colors, numbers, sizes & shapes. They have the ability to enhance their memory skills as well as their attention span. Children move on to a higher level of thought as they play in a stimulating environment such as ours. They develop their language skills as they learn to cooperate, negotiate and take turns.
Our interest centers provide opportunities to engage in dramatic play, enhance literacy, test hypothesis, explore the world of letters and their sounds, numbers, and quantities, strengthen their bodies, augment eye-hand coordination, improve self-help skills, critical thinking and leadership.
We introduce music & movement, yoga, authors and illustrators, evolving sensory experiences but most importantly, we use the children’s interests and activities to guide learning, promoting children’s self-confidence and motivation to learn.
Our mission is to provide, with parent participation, developmentally appropriate learning experience through play, creativity and discovery.
