Mission

Portland's most colorful, authentic, and empowering publishing house and distributor, Microcosm Publishing is a vertically integrated publishing house that equips readers to make positive changes in their lives and in the world around them. Microcosm emphasizes skill-building, showing hidden histories, and fostering creativity through challenging conventional publishing wisdom with books and bookettes about DIY skills, food, bicycling, gender, self-care, and social justice. The then-distro and record label was started by Joe Biel in his bedroom in 1996 and is now among the oldest independent publishing houses in Portland, OR. Microcosm focuses on relating the experiences of what it's like to be a marginalized person. We constantly strive to be recognized for our spirit, creativity, and value. Our books are printed in the U.S. on post-consumer papers while we double the industry standard in our number of women authors.
Microcosm has lived in milk crates, in closets, in a mud room, in a windowless basement, in a church, and under a desk at a major credit card company. We've brought our brightly colored books to infoshops, zine fests, media summits, bicycle conferences, parks, street corners, house shows, dirty bars, allnight coffeeshops, art museums, and every corner of the mainstream where we can clear away a little space to set up shop. We set out to save ourselves from not caring, but out there in the margins we've found communities worth always doing it better for. Now we have contracts instead of handshakes, a warehouse instead of a fanny pack full of zines. We have a staff, we have relationships in the industry that send our books to places we wouldn't have dreamed we could walk into ourselves. We're not as drunk or dirty as we used to be. But still, at heart, we've got this milk crate strapped to the back of a bike and we're riding wildly across town to hand you the book that might just be the one that saves your life. We refuse to die. Get over it.

"We publish and distribute books and zines that help readers empower themselves to change their lives and the world. In our bookstore / open warehouse, we carry reading on topics like bicycling, punk, vegan cooking, mental health, healthy relationships, anarchism, witchcraft, conspiracies, and much more. We also have a large selection of t-shirts, patches, stickers, and buttons. Look for us in the green building behind the giant BOOKSTORY sign."

Stumbled upon this publishing company at a couple local festivals. I was immediately struck by the off-beat, relevant and unique topics covered by the publications. There are so many books worth reading that it is sometimes hard to choose. I highly recommend checking out the website - there is something in there for everyone and your life will be enriched by reading anything in the catalog!
I pre-ordered the Ariel Gore book and was really happy with the whole process from ordering to picking up.
Love love LOVE Microcosm. They've got the coolest selection of books at fantastic prices. I've got about 40 books in my cart rn.
I've ordered from the catalog before but finally had the opportunity to visit the shop yesterday. It's very cozy, well-organized and well-stocked. The person working was friendly and offered helpful suggestions for related reading material. It was a uniquely positive experience. Thanks for existing, Microcosm.
Great selection you can’t find anywhere else. I sure support these people for hiring someone with special needs. As the mom of an adult son with Autism, job opportunities are few and far between. Your store clerk was friendly enough and efficient. Thanks again Microcosm for your compassion and great selection. I’ll be back.
Love them! They threw in a couple extra items with my order and made my day! My order got here sooner than I expected. They always have the best and most interesting inventory of self help and DIY books.
What great store. They have such an extensive selection of books and zines. Super friendly folks, too. You could easily be there for an afternoon and not feel like you've groked all of their offerings.
The guy who works at this bookstore is absolutely bonkers. It took him 45 minutes to come downstairs, then 30 more minutes of him rifling through his backpack and he STILL wouldn't ring me up. I had to leave. Book selection fabulous, but unfortunately you can't buy anything.
Stopped by the store today, while out cycling, and wanted to see if they had any good books that I could read over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Well, I'll never know because the guy who was working was an absolute smart ass. I can promise you that I'll never spend my money here. This was my first & last visit to this ugly green BookStory establishment.
The books are unique and inspiring. The zines are even better. And the people seal the deal. They asked if I wanted a cheaper slightly damaged version of a number of the books I was buying, for 20% off!
