The tallest mountain in the contiguous US, Mount Whitney reaches just under 15,000-ft elevation. It's a 13 mile hike to the summit (26 round trip) which can be accomplished in 1 day, and the mountaineers route is 7 miles (14 round trip).
The standard route is full of switchbacks while the mountaineers route is more of a vertical climb which makes gear and equipment more necessary. If you do tackle the mountaineers route make sure to have a map and to read up on forums to make sure you don't get lost. Otherwise, both routes offer beautiful scenery. It is truly an remarkable place.

4/13/18 Just summited yesterday. The snow conditions were perfect. I took snow shoes but I didn't even need them. The final 400 on the mountaineers route was pretty snowed in but held up nicely. The class 2 traverse looked a little more treacherous than the class 3.

The most amazing experience in my life. The mountaineer's route is incredible. Everyone should climb Mount Whitney once. The geology of the Sierra Nevada, and the Basin and Range are in full view.

Mount Whitney twice 2000 and 2001 first time all in 20 hours - second time the usual 3 days - second summit date was "9/11" - all fantastic memorable experiences except for what was otherwise happening on 9/11.
