Newtowne School

About

Newtowne School in Cambridge, MA is a Reggio Emilia-inspired parent cooperative preschool for children ages 22 months to 5 years.

Story

Parent Cooperative
Newtowne is a cooperative venture of parents, teachers and children. At Newtowne, parents contribute in the following ways:

• Parent jobs: Every parent has a job, ranging from roles in school management and administration to fund raising, enrollment and classroom maintenance.

• Classroom help: Parents help out in the classroom approximately one morning every three weeks, assisting teachers with curriculum and classroom management, providing snack, and sharing their interests and family traditions with the community. Parent helping allows parents to be actively involved in the classroom and to gain insight into their child’s world.

• Newtowne events: The school relies on help from families at school fund raising events and at the annual Spring Fair.

• Work days: Twice each year, parents come together at the school to help teachers clean and prepare the classrooms for the children.

Mission

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: Children find meaning and joy through play. Our commitment to this essential truth is seen in our rich, developmentally appropriate play-based curriculum. Inspired by the progressive education tradition, our classroom environments are carefully designed to promote a sense of wonder, inquiry, and human connection. We believe that the environment is a teacher; our bright spacious classrooms offer quiet spaces for children to work in small groups, cozy corners for being comfortable or alone, and engaging play structures at varying heights and angles for active gross motor and dramatic play.

During the course of the day, children have the opportunity to use different learning spaces for explorations involving nature, stories, engineering, mathematical reasoning, and music. Each classroom features a writing center and an expressive arts studio where children can develop their ideas in a variety of media. We also have a larger studio, staffed by our all-school Studio teacher, where children find resources, technical advice, and a place to create.

At Newtowne, we believe that the expressive arts represent the many ‘languages of childhood.’ Newtowne teachers spend time each day reflecting on each child’s development, as well as documenting children’s projects with the use of journals, cameras, and a record of the child’s own words. This documentation makes learning visible for children, parents, and teachers. As teachers observe, respond, and reflect, they encourage children to take their own learning seriously and become more deeply involved in it. This approach promotes a level of cognitive and emotional engagement that prepares children for the critical thinking they will need as they grow
older.

Newtowne has a scholarship fund for qualified families and we strongly encourage families seeking financial aid to apply. Please contact our director for more information.

My daughter started at Newtowne as a 3-year-old with no previous group care experience, and she has absolutely thrived in this setting. The teachers and director are all exceptional people- so knowledgable, kind, and approachable. Every time I go into the school I am amazed by the thoughtful and creative activities her teachers have been engaging her in, in addition to her weekly music and studio time. Newtowne also excels at communication with parents- we get weekly school newsletters and each classroom has a blog so we can follow along with what my daughter is learning, in addition to daily check ins with teachers at drop off and pick up. A great community of people who really care about young children.
We sent both our kids to Newtowne and had a wonderful experience. The teachers are full of energy and very thoughtful with curriculum. They have a younger classroom for 2 year olds that was unique and wonderful. Highly recommend.
Our family loves Newtowne! The teachers approach their work with a depth of thoughtfulness, creativity and passion that is unparalleled. The physical space is magical and inviting. The Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum is child-centered and inspiring, fostering social-emotional growth, confidence and curiosity, all within the framework of relationships. We love being a part of Newtowne’s diverse community and the co-op model allows us to participate in our children’s education and strengthen relationships and supports within our community. An incredible school through and through!
Our daughter has been at Newtowne for two years now and I cannot sing it's praises highly enough. The teachers are warm and loving, and have helped my child grow socially and emotionally. The environment inspires creativity and allows the kids to explore and learn about how things work. This year her classroom has a makerspace and she has really developed an interest in building and creating things. As a first time parent, I've also found the teachers a great resource when I had questions about my child. We cannot wait until our younger child is old enough to attend Newtowne as well!
We have been going to Newtowne for 3 years 2 years with my daughter, and now my son's first year. It is an amazing, magical place. The care and attention they show the children is so special - there is real respect for childhood, and they treat the children as independent, real people. The teachers are kind, loving, creative, and so thoughtful about every aspect of the classroom experience. It is a co-op, so there is a fair amount of parent involvement, but you really know what is happening in the classroom, as well as the other children and families. It is a great community, and a really beautiful place to begin the school experience.
We LOVE Newtowne. It is a lovely, warm, and inviting space for children to learn. Our son has been there for 2 years, and we can't wait for our daughter to be old enough to go as well in a couple years. The school, and its teachers, take great pride and care in their teaching. Everytime we drop our son off at school, there are various interesting learning stations set up around the classroom, inviting him and his classmates to explore and learn how things works. There is an emphasis on kindness, which is much needed in today's world, and community. We can't recommend it more highly.
Our son is thriving at Newtowne. From the very first day he arrived, he has been supported and nurtured and feels at home in the community. As parents, we feel informed, included and grateful to the teachers and educators for the loving and enriching environment they sustain.
I have sent two children to Newtowne school and can't sing its praises enough. From the brilliant educators to the family cooperative model it's the perfect place for families to grow and be inspired. I'm deeply proud to be a Newtowne Family.
We love Newtowne preschool! It's an inspiring place for our children and us. As a reggio inspired school our kids are supported in their learning explorations in beautiful kind loving ways.
We love the teachers at Newtown. They are what make it fabulous and I cannot say enough about them. My son went there for three years and every year the teachers were fantastic.
