Sonder No. 284 Back Bay has no accountability to its patrons and literally no staff. It is an empty box. After traveling for 8 hours, we stopped by to leave off our luggage. We were greeted by a rude woman who was "on my way out." She insisted we had received an e-mail with a code to get into the front door and into our room; there had been no e mail sent welcome letter until we had been there 24 hours. The code she initially gave us did not work. We were lucky she was still there to give us a different code; otherwise, we would need to call a number and wait to get into the guest house. This was after traveling all day. Once inside the hotel, you would need to call a Sonder number to get ANY assistance coffee machine broken, fresh towels, etc. What makes this so sad is we had stayed at No. 284 before Sonder took over, during the pandemic. The staff bent over backward with bagged breakfasts yogurt, fruit, coffee downstairs, lovely amenities, and staff who would welcome and assist guests. After this experience, we will never stay at any Sonder property. It is no wonder their stock is trading at such a depressed level.
Great, comfy bed and very beautiful location. Super central and safe area. I knocked a star off because our room wasn’t completely cleaned when we arrived there was a suspect substance on the toilet seat. I think the cleaner probably just had a bad day , would still recommend!
Starting at 9pm at night at checkin my spouse sat outside of the hotel for 3 1/2 hours, because the door lock technology failed. They couldn’t get into the building. There is no staff to assist and I had not landed in Boston yet. When I arrived I also tried the code and it failed. After another 30 mins and speaking with a Sonder rep who had me try the code again finally got IT and give us another code over the phone… The new code worked and we were told to disregard the old code the app gave us. When we asked for a late checkout we were immediately denied via text even though we lost hours on our stay do to Sonder’s failure to prepare for our visit. The next morning used their locker system in the lobby only to be locked out of the hotel again so we could retrieve our bags. Back on the phone we were…
I have spent the last 3 hours trying to just add a night, and at the end of the day, I've found it is literally impossible. My first 4 nights were booked with Expedia, and they couldn't do it because Sondor took their availability off the table after I booked my room. Sondor is playing games, saying to add one night in this same room, which Travelocity, Expedia, and every other site advertises for $175, is $400. This isn't even a hotel - it's really just an Air-B&B condo on steroids. They literally have no customer service or even a desk to check in at. As for Expedia - if my company hadn't referred me to it I could have saved $20-$30 on any other site. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY BOOKING AT THIS SONDOR OR USING EXPEDIA
The check in process was really annoying. Since I booked this though another portal, there was an error & I did not get the check-in instructions. There's no lobby/ receptionists so calling the help line at 11PM was not fun. It took about 20 minutes on the phone to get the codes to my room and the building. The studio room is spacious and looks just like the photos. Great room to have if you need a work station. The bathroom is small but clean and updated note only a shower, no tub. The bed was comfortable but the sheets felt like paper, scratchy and cheap. There was a mini fridge, kettle and coffee station that was useful. Location is great and very walkable, hidden between the other brownstones. A lovely neighborhood to walk around, eat & shop. Despite those great things, I would not stay here again mainly due to the sheets and small bathroom.
Nice place, however our TV didn’t work the first night. Getting in touch with someone was challenging because it’s virtual only. They offered me a credit, however they never sent it to me.
From the beginning at check in. We didn’t get our code. Called a number and we were told it would be a few minutes it too us 45 minutes to get a code to come in. They don’t clean either and they have a door stopped right in the middle of the room that I’m sure everyone has tripped over multiple timesRooms: 1/5
Hotel will not let you check in before 4 pm even though they list you can pay a fee to check in at 1. This is not a boutique hotel as advertised. Everything is remote like a vending machine. No staff. At this point it would be better to just go find a traditional chain hotel or nice local Airbnb owned by a Bostonian rather than some faceless entity.
My wife and I stayed in the penthouse unit "Stellar Queen Room w/ Balcony" and enjoyed our stay. The location makes it a wonderful spot for exploring the walkable Back Bay neighborhood with tons of food and shopping options. The unit has its own private rooftop deck which had great views toward Boylston St. This property has no staff imagine it as a rental on VRBO or AirBnB, though there is a cleaning crew that tidies up common areas and rooms after a guest checks out. We let ourselves into the property with a code that was emailed to us, and leaving was as easy as closing the door behind us. WiFi was decently fast and reliable. There is no TV service, but a Roku is provided for using our own streaming accounts. Parking was at the Prudential Center a few blocks away at $44 per 24 hours.
No. 284 is by far the coolest place we've ever stayed! We stayed in the penthouse and it was spectacular- especially with the rooftop deck. We loved everything about this place: the location, the building, the history, the staff, all of it! I can't say enough about Aura who assisted me through the whole process, from booking to things to do and see, to dining, etc. She was absolutely amazing and made our experience that much better. It was our first time visiting Boston and staying at No. 284 was the icing on the cake. We will definitely stay again! Well done!
