It's a very small place with limited seating. I kept my order basic: brown rice. I do hope to return for a more interesting meal. It's ideal for a party of two or three. But you have to get there at the right time to get one of the two booths. I think the place could feel uncomfortably crowded with 12 people in attendance. Pick a slow time, on a slow day. It could be lovely romantic lunch or a great memory to share with out of town friends who wants to get a taste of Portland.
A classic dish with amazing sauce! The Thai lime iced tea was a perfect pairing with their chicken + rice meal! So fresh and delicious! The winter melon cilantro soup was light and there is complimentary hot tea. The shop closes at 2pm and has limited indoor and outdoor seating so def get there early!
Sooo good. The sauce is the kicker. We had the eponymous main dish which was very good. The chicken rolls with peanut sauce were splendid, and the liver were tasty too. Soul warming food especially on a brisk day.
As I grew up from Singapore, was excited to try this take of hainanese chicken rice. Was very tasty and quite close to home. Chicken was very tender. Soup was excellent.
Dark meat with the original sauce is the best, but if you’re curious about the peanut one you could try. A bit pricey but it’s worth a try because it tastes great. Portion is small so get the large size if you’re hungry.
Small and simple place with perfectly cooked chicken, and that is about it. Come for the chicken, but don’t expect ambiance. Quick service and tasty Thai iced tea.
Profoundly mediocre, basic and grossly overpriced with inattentive staff and kitchen. My to go meal: Dry white chicken slices I ordered dark meat over white rice I ordered brown rice and a side container of peanut sauce. The side order of soup "winter squash, cilantro, green onion, fried garlic" . check their menu picture. was actually a small portion of plain, almost clear broth. What chef could be proud of this food?
It reminded me of singapore hainam chicken rice. The chicken was tender, the sauce and chili made it perfect. The rice was perfect too. Its hard to find dishes like this in the us.Recommended dishesChicken and Rice Khao Man Gai, Sauce
Update 3 years later: still delicious and worth a stop! Highly recommend checking this place out when in Portland! I've had chicken and rice at other places but Nong's is up there on the list. The place is small though so I could imagine it getting crowded all the time. We went on a weekend morning when they opened and was able to get seating without wait.
Ordered the chicken and rice, placed the order and we got lucky that a table cleared up before our food was ready. This would be my go to lunch spot every week if I lived in Portland, perfect for the cold weather. It was a perfect amount of food for my partner but I would definitely get the large order next time.
