I am writing anonymously because I have recently seen Dr Oon Tan and I do not wish for her or her office to contact me. This doctor may be intelligent and highly skilled but along with this she is condescending. She was not able to suggest a solution to my skin problem that would help and be feasible, so during the second meeting, she resorted to suggesting that I did not take care of my skin well enough. Some of the questions she asked and assumptions she made were insulting. For example, she said the persistent inflammation on a part of my face may be because I do not clean or treat that region. Her advice was also quite dated. I left her office feeling insecure. I had to defend myself and my common sense even when I had vulnerably shared my problems with her. That is not okay for any physician who has the privilege of entering people's lives in their moments of discomfort and pain. She should approach her patients with more humility, respect, and kindness.
Dr. Tan is a good dermatologist and doctor, however, after all I've gone through at her office I have no desire to return. Her office is in a building surrounded by high-end physicians many cosmetic surgeons so I felt very out of place going to her office. I have lots of skin concerns and needed to be seen; I went with the first doctor I could find taking new patients. However, none of the billing is up front, either at the desk or at the billing department you have to go to instead of handling it in office. I've been in debt from a procedure that's caused me pain for months, and didn't know I would be in debt until weeks after. I received no aftercare information for my procedure other than 'be careful'. I had three moles removed with stitches and I still have constant pain and sensitivity in the area, however, I just can't afford to go back to her. Her office staff was very rude about my concerns regarding billing - in general it just didn't seem middle class friendly at all. Probably my fault for going to a doctor downtown, but care competence wasn't adjusted to fit my needs which is important to me in any type of physician. I don't feel like I received service in line with how much financial hardship my visits with her have caused even with insurance, especially when she tells you one thing and billing tells you something else two weeks after your appt. Overall, if you're not comfortable in a more high-end environment that comes with a big bill, I would go elsewhere.
I was completely disappointed in this doctor. I made this appointment because I have eczema only on my elbows and I wanted this to be the focus on my appointment. I was taken in my the sweetest and nicest nurse. I let her know what the problem was and she gave me 2 options. The doctor could either just see my elbows today or This doctor could be my primary dermatologist doctor but I would have to do a full body exam today. I honestly didn’t think the full body exam was necessary at the moment. So I choose to do have this appointment focus on my elbows. She told me that was perfectly fine and told me the doctor would be in shortly. The doctor walked in rudely saying “so you don’t want to do the full body exam?” I told her I didn’t think it was necessary at the moment. She continued to push me to do this exam which now I really didn’t feel comfortable doing at all. She threw the gown on my lap and told me to get undressed. I then told her one last time I did not want to do this exam and she said “how can I look at you if you will not do this exam” I then told her again it was only on my elbows but that I was fine & that I can leave now since I now felt so overwhelmed. She walked out of the room, I never got checked, never got any medicine, took a day off of work, paid for Boston parking and I paid my co pay got it refunded though. I’m sure if I did the full body exam My insurance would’ve gotten billed a lot more than just checking up on one thing. It’s sad that this doctor only cares about the money. I will not be going back or recommending anyone at all.
I've been seeing Dr. Tan for more than 30 years for a port wine stain. She and all her research have changed my life dramatically. I am blessed to have such a caring and talented physician.
Dr Tan has been on my team since 1999. I am blessed that I found her on Commonwealth Ave and wasn’t at all surprised to hear that she continues to collaborate to develop better technology. This little lady is a visionary - rockstar - pioneer
