Our temple, the oldest in Oregon, follows Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. It is a path oriented toward inclusion, gratitude, and the lives of laypeople.
The Oregon Buddhist Temple (OBT) was founded November 29, 1903 (originally as the Portland Buddhist Church), making us the oldest Buddhist organization in Oregon.
Our sangha follows Jodo Shinshu (or Shin) Buddhism, which has been referred to as "blue collar" Buddhism and the practice-less practice. Our sect is non-monastic and geared toward everyday experiences and families.
OBT started as a community to service the religious and cultural needs of Portland's Japanese immigrants. While we grew up in the Japanese-American community and are proud of our heritage and traditions, we are happy to be growing and becoming increasingly diverse. OBT welcomes all people, regardless of ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identification, and political or religious affiliation.
Our weekly services are typically on Sunday at 10:00 am. Please check our website calendar for service schedule as well as special services and events.
