This hotel is very upfront about what it is: small rooms with shared bathrooms so you can spend your money having fun in New York is instead of $300 a night on a Manhattan hotel. The rooms are small but have a lot of shelf space and it seemed like a decent place to crash.
We paid extra for a private bath because we weren't into the shared bathroom idea. What we didn't count on is that almost everyone else had a shared bath - which meant CONSTANT DOOR SLAMMING starting in the evening when you are trying to fall asleep, and picking back up again at about 6am. Also, the bed had no box spring and felt like a slab of concrete.
If you choose to stay here after reading this review, please remember these words when you are being jarred awake at 6am.

Unexpected charge checking out for a "facilities fee" for facilities I didn't use (walking tours, baggage check) but was condescendingly obliged to pay for. Wasn't explained at check in.
Update: After looking at my credit card statement, there is another unauthorized transaction on top of the one I have a receipt for.
The room cannot be darkened completely: the bathroom has a frosted window with a clear window from the shower into the area with the bed, with no curtains. So if you've had a late night, don't expect to sleep in.
On that note, you can hear your neighbours. Painfully clearly. For example, from my room I could hear the shower running in the shared bathroom down the hall as clearly as I could hear my own shower. As one might imagine, late on a Saturday night, that was far from the least disturbing thing I heard. Kept up all night. No action from staff.
That aside, the room was clean enough, tiny but functional (minus the light problem).

Cute hotel, we booked same day and got there earlier than the check-in time. They allowed us to check in early which was incredibly convenient and allowed for a smoother transition for our stay and plans. They have a garden and a rooftop which were cute. The room we booked was very small but they have a lot of options to choose from which is nice. We also were able to do a late check-out and they held our luggage for us until we were ready to head home. Interesting hotel concept, I'd say it's a mixture between a hostel (shared bathrooms available) and a luxury hotel (attention to detail and amenities). Overall good stay, no complaints.

Had a great time here a few weeks back. Friendly staff and a really neat atmosphere. Rooms are small, but have an artsy, hip feel to them. Most reasonably priced place I could find and the rooftop is beautiful!! Thanks Pod 51! I’ll be back!

Quirky, comfortable, and cozy! Loved staying here. Private bathroom is TINY! Think RV size. Also, if you're rooming with someone, be prepared to have no privacy. When you shut the door to the bathroom, the door no longer covers the window that looks into the bedroom, which means that the door is essentially useless. People in the main room can literally look at you sitting on the toilet. Something to consider! The staff is friendly, however, and the price for the location can't be beat.
