This is an amazing little museum and a great resource for the community. If you are traveling on I-64 and want a dose of art, history and river culture, stop here. We learned so much about the history of Portland, the Ohio River and contemporary life. Great for kids! Kudos to the staff! It's a free museum, but it's always great to donate.
We went today, a gloomy rainy day but it was extremely nice inside. It was our first time going and we will be back. Everything was nice and neat. Beautiful building and exhibits. We enjoyed the local history and the African art. The historian there was super kind to us and very informative. I can't wait to go again on a beautiful day where we can enjoy the outdoor part as well.
If you like small regional museums , this is a gem. It has a nice history of the area. They will be adding a children's museum in the future.
Wonderful museum. Portland is an interesting neighborhood worthy of studying. Friendly staff.
What a great place! I went to the exhibit from the Smithsonian on voting and democracy. The Portland Musuem did a beautiful job with the displays. This FREE museum is easy to get to and has a beautiful outdoor space/courtyard in the historic building. Easy on-street parking is free too.
Hi, I came to visit the museum last week, but left when I saw you required masks. In my 70 years of life, I have NEVER seen so much incorrect information, as now exists on FACE MASKS. For the record, THE Surgeon General of the U.S. stated emphatically multiple times that masks do NOTHING to protect us from the Corona Virus - NOTHING -, AND the Kentucky Public Health Agency has a "GUIDANCE ON CLOTH FACE MASKS" directive online, that quotes --- "CLOTH MASKS DO NOT HAVE THE PROPER DESIGN OR NECESSARY MATERIALS TO FILTER OUT VIRUS PARTICLES AND THEREFORE DO NOT ENSURE YOU WILL NOT BECOME INFECTED BY COVID-19". - -This whole phenomena has misled people from the beginning. Even Dr. Fauci said several times that no one should wear a mask UNLESS they have tested positive for Covid, AND THAT THEY HAVE VISIBLE SYMPTOMS. The CDC conducted tests for 40 + YEARS, that found that cloth masks have little impact on the transmission of VIRUSES. AND tying these all together was an article in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, stating definitively that cloth masks were created to block BACTERIA which are composed of fairly large molecules. VIRUSES have very tiny molecules, and pass right through the fabric of cloth masks, as if they weren't even there. THAT IS THE REAL VERIFIABLE SCIENCE THAT YOU CAN REAFFIRM. The mandates are NOT based on science, but based on the desperation of fear. In fact, several Nationally recognized Epidemiologists stated that they believe THE MASKS ARE DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD direct quote. They pointed out that since most everyone REUSES the same masks over and over, the cloth fiber absolutely holds the germs and viruses it encounters. The U.S. Army did tests regarding masks, since Covid started, and their fully Masked cleansed protected group developed more Covid than their unprotected non-mask wearing group !!! --- Remember scientists stated WE NEED YOUNG HEALTHY PEOPLE INFECTED to initiate HERD IMMUNITY Nature's best way of protecting us. THUS, as many "freaked out" at the surges, the facts are that we should have applauded them in the young and healthy, because that shows that Herd Immunity is finally taking hold as it already would have had we not precluded our best defense by unwarranted closings. ---------- It is bad enough that our Governors, Mayors and the mainstream press get all of this so very wrong, but it is criminally reprehensible that supposedly educated Doctors would dare to speak such provable lies, and/or be so ill-informed on something medical. NOTHING, Dr. Fauci now states reversing his earlier directives changes the physics of cloth masks, viral molecule size, nor supersedes the 40 + years of CDC testing !! BUT if you refuse to seek out REAL SCIENCE, don't listen to Dr. Fauci, don't listen to me, USE YOUR OWN common sense. Provably, ALL of the major surges began in 2020, ONLY AFTER VIRTUALLY EVERY AMERICAN WAS WEARING FACE MASKS FOR TWO WHOLE MONTHS !!! REREAD THE NEWSPAPERS of those months, if your memory isn't clear. More than any test anyone can run or has run in the past, this observation is undeniable, AND IS ABSOLUTE PROOF that mask wearing helps not one whit in protecting people from Viruses. If one ever took a single Logic Course, you would have to agree that there is no other way to read those findings. IF the masks even partly worked the surges would have evened out if not in fact dropped when everyone was masked. Additionally, the CDC can acknowledge that 99% of us were NEVER in any danger from Covid other than MAYBE feeling crummy for 4 or 5 days only those with Compromised Immune Systems were in grave danger. Drop this silly notion that mandating mask usage helps anything or anyone. Let's get on with life. The people unvaccinated and not wearing masks have heard all the dangers, and have made their choices, as FREE PEOPLE in a Representative Republic have the right. They neither want nor need, nor will tolerate further edicts.

Enjoyed our visit to the Portland Museum on the Louisville Cultural Pass. Very in-depth history of Portland and how it related to the Ohio River and Louisville. There are many fascinating stories to be heard here. The old house which is part of the museum is also rich with history. Well worth spending a couple of hours or more here. Don't miss the newsreels of the 1936 flood, either!
Great little museum. Portland is rich in history and was the largest city until the canal was built around the Falls of the Ohio. Portland is full of pride and has great potential to be a booming neighborhood. It is the largest neighborhood in Louisville.
It's simply wonderful! Everyone in Louisville should visit and learn the REAL history of our city. Excellent displays and write-ups. VERY nice, knowledgeable and helpful people. This place is a hidden jewel. Go on a week-day and have lunch at The Table just down the street. Restaurant open Mon.-Fri., 11am-3:00. Food is great. A "pay as you go" effort that has been a resounding success! pw
