Story

About Cheri's Preferred Puppies Cheri's Preferred Puppies is owned by Cheryl Dalton. For over 21 years, Cheryl has been dedicated to selling only quality, locally-bred puppies. This dedication and Cheryl's determination to provide healthy, well-socialized puppies to each customer, has contributed to Cheri's Preferred Puppies becoming the oldest pet store in the greater tri-state area. In December 1986, Cheryl purchased the Fins, Feathers, and Fur pet store and renamed the business Noah's Ark. Under Cheryl's new management, the store thrived and expanded its inventory. Within 18 months, the limited parking and small retail space on Main Street was outgrown. In 1988, Cheryl moved the entire store to a larger location in the Hamilton West shopping center. The store was thoroughly renovated into the most elegant full-line pet store in the area. In the mid 1990s, the big-box, super-stores entered the pet industry. They sold dry goods and a limited assortment of small animals, but essentially conceded puppy sales to smaller, local shops who could manage the difficult task of acquiring and maintaining healthy puppies.

Bought my puppy from here! This is a small business that has been in Hamilton for years. Shop could use some updating, and prices are a little high for some of the non-registered dogs such as mine. Nevertheless, they have some really adorable dogs, and a lot of interesting mixes. I have never found another dog the same as mine, and that's what I love about her! border collie/poodle mix, weighs approx. 12 pounds. Pictures: the store photo from when I got her at 8 weeks, and then at about a year old.
Just got a puppy from Cheri, and both the puppy and the experience were great. We got there right before open with a specific puppy in mind, and she unlocked the door to let us in. She set out a blanket for us to meet the puppy and play together. Before we left, she gave him a dosage of his de-worming medicine showing us how to do it, and gave us three prefilled oral syringes to finish the regimen. She also went over his health requirements, made us sign a care agreement, and directed us to a reliable local vet for his initial checkup. Her customer service was friendly and personable, and she clearly had a deepfelt love for the puppies in her care. 10/10 would gladly recommend.
I purchased Tonic, my red male chow puppy from Cheri’s on March 28th and he has been a wonderful dog. The store is very clean & the cages the puppies were in were also tidy and didn’t appear to have any messes in them either we did get there a little early though, right as they opened as we live about 2hrs away . The woman who handled our transaction was nice but didn’t seem super informative - about the breeds of puppies, vaccination status they were supposed to be up to date but my puppy was already over 16 weeks old when I purchased him & was old enough for a rabies vaccine and had only ever had a Parvo vaccine & Bordetella , or some of the other questions I had. I also felt kind of rushed during my purchase / transaction, I had asked if the price he was listed at was there set price or if they may be willing to come down $100 & I was told that it was a set price that they weren’t going to be marked down until they had moved some of the larger dogs out which was understandable however his brother was marked down more than the $100 the following week - after I asked I had wanted a little bit more time to play with him & think about it but she asked if we were interested in purchasing him or not because she had more appointments that were needing to come in soon, I realize with COVID precautions going on that a lot of stores are by appointment only but I would have liked to have a couple more minutes to think on it & feel like I wasn’t being rushed. My puppy and his sibling were both experiencing some hair loss - mine had it on the tips of his ears, backs of his legs, and his belly. His sibling had hair loss in the same areas only more extensive. I was told this was where they had been playing rough together and with another sibling that had already been adopted & were pulling each other’s fur out. After I got him home he developed a cough, I called the clinic that Cheri’s deals with and they were unable to get me in for a month for his initial exam & for him coughing. I work for a vet clinic & I just took him into work with me because there was no reason to make him wait that long, he was diagnosed with bronchitis & possible skin mites - I did call Cheri’s and let them know about the situation & Tristen did get right back with me and was super helpful, they did also reimburse me the medication cost. At his vet visit with their recommended vet he was still having some skin issues, they did do a skin scrape and one other type of testing and they came back negative, he was prescribed antibiotics & an allergy medication because they thought he could have had a possible reaction to the wood chips he had been caged in at the store. He has been a great dog since getting him home & I like that Cheri’s offers a different variety of breeds, they are also quick to respond if you call them with an issue, I do feel as if his skin issue has been a process to manage but they have made their best effort to help with that as well.
My family and I stumbled across Cheri’s Preferred Puppies completely by chance. Lisa and her assistant were extremely helpful and impressively knowledgeable about the puppies. I’ve worked in a hospital environment for over 22 years so I can tell when someone actually has valid knowledge or is slinging a sales pitch and putting on a fake front. Lisa is the manager at this shop and has over thirty years of experience as a vet tech. She goes above and beyond to make sure all of the puppies are healthy and have the best chance at finding a family that will take good care of them. She really seems to care about the puppies. We bought our lemon drop beagle from this shop over two weeks ago. Since then I have called a couple of times to resource Lisa’s knowledge and she is always very friendly and accommodating. Lisa has also contacted us to follow up on our puppy’s well-being.. It’s very obvious how picky they are in finding proper breeders to deal with and the level of care and attention they show to their puppies reflects in the healthy puppies they are able to sell. We are very happy with our new puppy and the level of customer service that we have reviewed from Cheri’s Preferred Puppies Thank you for our little girl!!
The store was clean and the staff was wonderful, they answered all our questions. The issue arised one day after the sale. First, the dog we purchased had a cold at the store based on the fluid coming out of its eyes - I didn't know this until the vet explained this. Second, we asked the store two questions after the sale, they only responded to one question and ignored the second question which was, "Can we take the dog to a local vet since the vet the store uses couldn't get us in until 2 weeks later." We explained the puppy was sick but again they chose to ignore the question. So we took our puppy to the local vet and sure enough the puppy did have a bad cold and still has the cold and the bill was approximately $250.00. We asked the store to pay for the procedure and drugs, we would pay for the vet fee; however, they responded with a simple statement stating, "In the contract, we had to take the puppy to the store's vet." Our second trip to the vet cost us approximately $520.00 for the same issue, and another visit is scheduled for the future. Based on my experience with this store, it would seem they care more about the bottom line then they care about the animals they sell - the store would have let the puppy get sicker or die. By the way, the day we were at the store 2 other dogs had colds and required attention. We were told a local vet comes to the store once a week to check the animals' health, I guess based on our observations he wasn't doing a very good job. Secondly, the sick puppies were with the healthy dogs. Sorry to leave a negative review but when we asked for help, the store let the dog down miserably.
LOVE them!! Wonderful experience working to find the right fit for our family. They genuinely care about the puppies in their care and have given us excellent advice even over a year after on how to help our dog socialize. Prices are reasonable as well when comparing to other stores and breeders. Go find your new family member today!
I love this little shop! We bought our Chinese crested from here and she is the best dog we have ever had. We couldn't deicide on a dog and visited the shop several different times over several months hoping to find the perfect puppy, and we did. Cheri was always welcoming and knowledgeable about her puppies. I would recommend this shop to any one looking for a new member of the family. I'm glad we did! Update: it's been 5 years and our dog is still the best dog we've ever had.
Do your research before buying a companion at this place. Consistently purchasing dogs from out of state breeders, although denies it when questioned. Owner is very defensive on business practice. Does business with Levi Graber who is nationally known google him-levi graber with blue ribbon kennels as one of the absolute worst breeders in the country. Multiple puppy mill citations of selling sick animals. Find a reputable breeder and make sure you can see the parents of the puppy you are purchasing.
I love this place and my little man that I got from them!! They were so helpful and the price I payed for everything I got with Cudi was an amazing deal. You can definitely tell that these people care about the puppies health. You can't pet the puppies and I respect that because you never know where people have been before coming in there! they also mentioned some puppies have had live vaccines while their rescues have not which makes total sense!! The women that work there are extremely knowledgeable, very nice and so funny! It was a great experience and I will definitely be back for another puppy in the future. Oh and their 32 year old bird Columbus is so funny and was such a cool part of the experience!!
I love Cheri's Preferred Puppies! They worked with me and helped me get my 3 year old son with disabilities a puppy at a reasonable price The only thing was, we had to stay for a really long time because there were so many people playing with puppies, that we couldn't get to the one we wanted. It was really aggravating because we were serious buyers and had to wait on people that were there just to play with puppies. Over all, good service, nice people, clean, informative and they call to check up on the puppy.
