Story

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Gateway Family YMCA is a powerful association of men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of community.

With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive. Anchored in more than 13 neighborhoods throughout Eastern Union and Middlesex Counties in New Jersey, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.

Though the world may be unpredictable, one thing remains certain – the Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities.

Mission

The Gateway Family YMCA is a community-based organization rooted in Christian principles and committed to building healthy lives through programs that strengthen the spirits, minds and bodies for people of all ages, religions and cultures.

Products

The Gateway Family YMCA - Rahway Branch offers a variety of programs and services. Here is a basic outline of just some of the ways we serve our community.

School Age Child Care
With so many demands on today’s families and the increased focus on early brain development, families need all the support they can get to nurture the potential of youth. That’s why child care and early learning programs at the Y focus on holistically nurturing child development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Summer Camp
Day camps at the Y share one thing: they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s fun too.

Health, Well-Being & Fitness
Because we know that healthy lifestyles are achieved through nurturing mind, body and spirit, well-being and fitness at the Y is so much more than just working out. Beyond fitness facilities, we provide educational programs to promote healthier decisions, and offer a variety of programs that support physical, intellectual and spiritual strength.

Member Services
The YMCA of Eastern Union County's most effective way to strengthen relationships and member involvement is by engaging members (whether members as participants, volunteers, staff, partners or community collaborators) at all levels and all ages in program design, operation and evaluation. We provide opportunities beyond individual and family activities for members to become involved, serve and lead the YMCA. Our goal is to align member experiences with the mission and focus on character development and values, support for health and well-being, developmental assets and relationship/community building.

Swimming
Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. The Rahway Branch offers swim lessons (for all ages), family swim, water exercise classes, a swim team, and many kinds of adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs, so we can all safely enjoy the pleasures of an aquatic environment.

Sports & Recreation
We believe sports, fun and exploring new interests aren’t just for the young. Along with improving health, whenever teamwork is involved, there’s the added benefit of being connected to others. That’s why you’ll find a range of recreational activities at the Y. With something to offer everyone, there’s no such thing as being too old to get in the game.

Healthier Communities Initiatives
At the Y, we work with community leaders to make the healthy choice the easy choice in all of the places where people live, work, learn and play.

I joined YMCA an year back. We had a family membership. There isn’t a single thing about this place that we don’t love. My daughter loves going for her swimming lessons. There’s always a life guard on duty in the pool area with a smile on their face all the time. And this place is huge. I was so surprised to see the cleanliness around. The washrooms are squeaky clean, in-fact the entire place is super nice n tidy. They have a kids play area with some toys and stuff and a care taker to look after them ! Kids can play around while parents can simply work on getting fit . Additionaly, they have summer/spring activity programs too with some extra fee. Their programs are way too good including , Zumba, Yoga, strength training and all. I found the membership a bit pricey howver one of my friends joined it when the membership fee was fully waived which i think is a great idea. Therefore, 5 stars to YMCA Rahway Branch for doing amazing work.
I honestly don’t recommend anyone to go to YMCA. I was going to Rahway facility to use the pool and I found the water a little cold in many occasions. I was waiting to see if this was fixed, but it wasn’t. They mention a temperature pool in their website, but they don’t keep it at that temperature. I also notified the staff members about this, but I didn’t see a change. That’s why I decided to cancel my membership at that moment. So one day i called and I was directed to the YMCA director Leonardo from Elizabeth facility to cancel my membership, and it was not easy to speak with him. He told me that I would need to come to the facility to sign a paper and that I would be charged an extra month. I asked him, “how can you charge me an extra month if I am not happy with the service at YMCA??? I don’t want to come back.” His answer was “ I am sorry that’s the rule.” I was hoping he would understand my situation and let me cancel my membership. I felt I was forced to pay an extra month for a service I didn’t like. Can you guys believe this?
The old white man at the front desk is very disrespectful and does not know how to talk to people. He talked to us as if we were stupid and didn't understand what he was saying to us. Very poor customer service on his part, the younger black women on the other hand was very nice to us. Rahway please do better.
The experience I had there with the swimming program was a nightmare….I sometimes used to hear some ppl say good things about YMCA, that’s totally not what I experienced there….I unfortunately regret going there. It was just not what I expected and I was extremely unsatisfied with a LOT, waste of time and money !
I recently just became a member and was very impressed at how courteous, friendly & helpful the staff was. Beautifully renovated inside & very easy to find the spacious lap pool ,basketball court ,treadmill/exercise bikes & of course the training gym . The best part was never feeling out of place while there because of injuries I am nursing as well as weight gain from it . There are young & old ,everyone with the same goal in mind-to be healthy .All around fantastic place ,couldn't ask for more !
I'm reviewing this solely based on use as a 'Gym', can't speak to fitness classes. The equipment is more than sufficient, they have a full suite of cardio and weightlifting options, as well as a pool. There is a bit to be desired in maintenance; the weight room generally reeks of body odor to be expected in a weight room with no windows..., and hand sanitizer dispensers are rarely if ever refilled. Has potential to be a top-tier facility with a little more attention to detail. Can't beat it for the price.
Horrible Horrible! I paid close to 500 dollars for swim lessons for my kids just for them to keep canceling because they were short staffed. They told me they would refund my money back in Sept! Its now November! No refund yet just the run around about technology errors. Do not waste your time here. Oh and I registered my kids for the previous session just for us to come in and go to the pool and be told we were not registered for sessions. They actually came in and told us this in front of other members. How embarrasing and they were WRONG! I had to show them my bank acct with the payment for them to see that we did register. They then had to add a new slot fo my kids because they had given away our timeslot and were not even nice about fixing THEIR ERROR! Horrible. I wish I could give 0 stars!
the afterschool program at this ymca is a complete waste of money... there is no structure and very little discipline..not much difference between the after care program and their summer camp that cost over 1000.00. unless you want your children to come home bullied or disrespectful do not send your children here you will regret every penny you spend. the staff is untrained and inattentive. my daughter us 7 has been bullied by older boys and called a fu*** ng b**** . and belongings stolen and despite reporting my concerns NOTHING HAS CHANGED. I WILL NEVER SEND HER BACK TO THE YMCA FOR ANY REASON.
I have been going off and on for a few years now, back when it was in bad condition and now it is a beautiful facility with the nicest staff. They treat everyone kindly and with respect. I live with constant pain so I can't go as often as I would like but I enjoy every minute there once I go.
A really horrible experience I signed up my daughter for after care this year on half days they did not watch the kids i had to call off work first 2 months of school was unavailable because they didn't have enough families to run the aftercare and it turns out when you sign a child up for aftercare you have to get a gym membership so i have to pay for july even though school is over and you need to go in person to cancel the only gym in NJ that you need to go in person to cancel in person also you have to give them 30days notice to cancel said the receptionist Maritza she wouldn't give me her last name when i asked to speek to someone higher up she said that its only her and a coworker so unprofessional and spammy i would not recommend this place to anyone non profit my butt its a joke
