Appreciating this zoo is all about proper expectations. It’s cute. Not big. Staff is very nice. Kid friendly with interactive play areas. My 10 and 7 year old loved the farm animals and attractions but I’m not sure a rural/local family would have the same experience. We did everything in about 90 minutes on a cold April day when nobody else was in the park. $40 for a family of four.
I love to visit zoos!! I liked this zoo. It's small. When we first walked in the immediate 2 enclosures were missing their animals. The fox's were asleep. Not a good start. Also I was excited to ride the carousel and it was closed for maintenance. What?? We walked into the building and there was just a girl sitting there like a bump on a log. NO workers working on the carousel! On a positive note I really enjoyed seeing the endangered animals and the work that the zoo is doing to protect them. Worth the visit? I guess yes.
The Red River Zoo might not be the largest, but it is very well laid out and has a fun assortment of animals! They also have a petting zoo where you can feed alpaca, goats, and a cow though she wasn’t feeling very sociable on the day we visited, lol! They also do a LOT of conservation work that I never would have expected. Definitely a good way to spend an afternoon! I would recommend going in spring or fall, as during summer it’s very hot and most animals seemed content to sleep away the heat, but it was very fun nevertheless.
Nice zoo. Animals seem well taken care of, has a nice gift shop, and employees seemed to care. It is rather small, and doesn't have a lot of animals. I'd say it's a good place to take your younger children. Had a nice little play area where kids can play when they have seen all the animals. The carousel was closed, and they don't know if they will have it open again. All in all, a nice zoo.
Cute zoo but very small-went thru the entire zoo in under 90 minutes. Trip a bit ruined by a massive group of small children in blue shirts not properly watched after who screamed non stop and would run right in front of us or others trying to look at exhibits. Not a great way to teach manners. Some exhibits were empty. Only saw one wolf. Expensive for what's there, have been to better zoos that were free. Kookaburra flew right into the glass which was sad to see.
It's still cold so many attractions where closed. But this is a great little zoo we have been here several times. Red Panda was not out my daughter was disappointed, but lover the otters digging in the snow.
This place is cool but I recommend coming in the summertime. I came on a Saturday and the place was nearly empty. Very quiet but I got to see the animals with no wait. Some exhibits were a little depressing but I attribute that to it being winter . The best animals were the crane, camels, foxes, Blanding's turtle, and the Jacob sheep. The cranes were cool because one of them was so chill and sleeping while the other was aggressive and tried biting me the whole time I was near the exhibit. The camels were totally just vibing, not a single thought or action, just vibes. The foxes ran around the exhibit and groomed themselves honestly it was super cute. The Blanding's turtle followed my finger around in his tank from the other side of the glass and was super energetic. The Jacob's sheep were aggressive but o ly when they realized I had coins, recognizing them as the ticket to food to which they promptly gobbled up all of the food I bought them from the machines provided. Other cool animals were the kookaburra, the corn snakes, the ravens, and what I believe to be a Himalayan Tahir. Last but not least, the red pandas were super chill. The discovery center of agriculture was a little out of place. Overall, bring the family for a really chill experience.
Just reviewing the Bison. Very easy to find. The tiger markings are obvious. This is just outside the zoo, so no admission. Freyja was told how cute she was modeling next to the Bison by a zoo visitor. This Bison could use a bit of"makeup", paint touch up.
Set your expectations appropriately and you'll have a good trip. The Red River Zoo is definitely a smaller zoo that can be gone through quite quickly. That said, it has an interesting assortment of animals that is a little bit different from other zoos. This included a variety of animals from wolves to porcupines to Pallas' cats. We did a porcupine encounter and really enjoyed the opportunity to meet and interact with Olivia and it's something I would definitely recommend.
Booked a surprise Red Panda Encounter for my Wife. The zookeeper, Marcy, was very knowledgeable and informative. She ensured our safety by taking precautions and guiding us during the experience. Her dedication to caring for the red pandas was evident. We would highly recommend this activity!
