My daughter will be attending camp for her 3rd year this summer. Through her summers with Sail Caribbean, her self confidence has grown and she's learned responsibility, independence, and sailing skills that will last her a lifetime. She's received sailing and scuba certifications and been able to tag sea turtles, dissect a squid, make hand blown glass jewelry, and experience beautiful hikes! She hopes to continue as a camper until she can return as a counselor in a few years!
Stay away at all costs. I had a horrible experience at Sail Caribbean. The camp was full of spoiled, petulant and nasty rich kids from around the Tri State and beyond. The promo video is very misleading. It was a miserable experience living on that boat with other kids in cramped quarters. I recall feeling an overwhelming sense of joy and relief when I finally was able to leave. Save your money and send your child elsewhere.
We enrolled our daughter here with the expectation she would learn lots about sailing and even navigation while diving and engaging in an educational setting. The onboarders we talked to spoke so high of it and even told stories about how "the kids navigate the ship on their journeys". While the setting is beautiful and safe, her experience was more like a booze cruise for kids her words. Lots of vulgar rap music non-stop and what seemed to be like lots of ill behaved kids away from their parents for the first time. When I brought up the over-sexualized music being played on the boat with the owner, I was assured it would stop and it was a mistake, but it never did. it was the captain's choice. She was very, very excited to do this and we expected it would be a multi-year experience. The non-stop partying and lack of educational settings was a disappointment from that respect, but the experience of traveling by boat to beautiful destinations is the experience of a lifetime at a young age. She enjoyed it, but didn't want to go back considering it wasnt the vibe she was expecting. If youre looking for a chill vibe with kids eager to learn, this isn't your trip. If you're looking for a young, almost frat-like, but pre-college experience, then this is it.
Our then 16 year old son attended last summer. He loved his 2 weeks there. Met new friends, learned sailing skills and said it was a great experience. Highly recommended he said. He was very impressed with staff/crew.
Our 16 year old daughter attended Sail Caribbean the summer of 2015 and although she is unable to attend this year we hope she will attend again in 2017. She thoroughly loved Sail Caribbean - she made friends, had a huge amount of fun, and gained knowledge and skills. She was already fairly independent but became even more so. Overall, the program helped her mature and she was enriched by the sailing and diving aspects of the program, accomplishing much more than we would had hoped. While she was there we received daily photos and reports from the team at Sail Caribbean so we could follow where they were and what they were up to. The camp is very professionally run, yet friendly, we were very impressed with every aspect of the program, from organization to execution to customer service, all was done with professionalism and heart...the result was as promised.
I've gone on SC for the past two summers and loved it. All the staff were super welcoming and patient. From the dive instructors to the day to day counselors you live with on board, there is a deep and mutual amount of respect that develops over just 3 weeks. There is enough room on all the boats for campers to find places to sleep, but I found myself in a hammock almost every night looking at the stars in the warm Caribbean air. Learning sailing and diving is all hands on. The instructors explain everything clearly so that every camper understands the concepts. I had never sailed before my first time at SC, and I feel very confident on a sailboat after SC. The balance between activities, down time and sailing is very well done. Our whole boat was exhausted by the end of the sail so downtime was highly needed. You really get to know everyone is your fleet over the course as you interact with them all the time. Both years I found myself enjoying the company of all my campers and counselors. There is an expectation to do chores and take turns cooking on the boat. This is, after all, a camp and not a luxury cruise. All my fellow campers were willing to do their part in helping on the boat. We all did was needed to be done on the boat. If you or your child is outgoing and looking for an adventure and to meet new friends I would highly recommend this program. If you want to do anything you want for 3 weeks in the Virgin islands, then you are probably better off staying at a luxury resort.
I was so pleased to find this program. My son was with Sail Caribbean for three weeks and loved every moment of his experience. The updates and the pictures sent via email helped me feel connected and a little jealous. His exposure to the marine biology and community service components had a positive influence on the trip. He continues to talk to and about his new friends. I highly recommend this summer adventure for those looking to expand their horizons while looking for a chance to explore the Caribbean Sea. The staff was extremely helpful in answering all of my questions and concerns and the registration website was easy to navigate. The entire process from beginning to end was seamless and worry-free.
Sail Caribbean has been a gift to my boys. They are 13 and 15. Both had the time of their lives there. Besides being a dream for anyone being in the BVI on a sailboat, as young boys, they gained confidence by participating in the sailing and diving programs. The program teaches them respect for their surroundings. They are given responsibilities and goals in a fun environment with very capable and fun counselors. They will have these fond memories for the rest of their lives. Sail Caribbean does such a good job at organizing the kids - from their lists of shipmates before the trip so they can FB each other, to daily communication with the parents and photos of our kids. Thank you for all you do Sail Caribbean!
When we enrolled our daughter in the program, we were really unsure of what to expect and what her reaction/experience would be. We had sailed the BVI's as a family when she was around 12, which she enjoyed. As all 17 year olds, she is glued to her phone, and all the other teenage distractions. Much to our delight she cannot not stop talking about what a great time she had on this adventure!! She participated in the dive certification program and received her certification. Planning a trip to Belize so she can dive some more. Taking the helm of the 50' boat and steering her through a 20 knot breeze, I was so jealous!! She has made plans to meet up with her boat mates on dry land. She met people from Texas, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island - all over the country. An incredible maturing experience for her!! We were so pleased with the staff!! The safety and well being of our daughter was first and foremost in everything they did and the way they conducted themselves. The on board personnel were outstanding!! They got everyone involved with cleaning, cooking, sailing, socializing. Really created a sense of camaraderie amongst the kids!! Truly an experience she will treasure for a lifetime! My greatest endorsement is we will be sending her back for the 3 week program next summer!! Trying to figure out how I can stow away!
If i could give this camp six stars I would
