Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest

Visited expecting to see a major forest, but it's mostly just grazing land. Still glad I visited though.

Very pretty but this is not a forest in any sense of the word.

When you enter the park there are few trees visible. Very unique National destination here in Nebraska. McKelvie is home to my favorite camp ground. This is a National Forest like no other. The remoteness of this National Forest makes it easy to forget the hustle and bustle of city life. Rewarding for those who have the desire to travel there.

One of our favorite places to visit, the prairies are pristine and beautiful, the sky so big, the Niobrara river peacefully flowing past the northern boundaries. It is exquisitely beautiful. Roads are rough/sandy so once you leave pavement you'd be better off with 4WD. We did it in 2WD but didn't push very far in on some of the roads. Can be buggy near water but usually not until the sun goes down. Great birdwatching!

Being from Illinois it always amazes me that there is so much public land out west. Regulations are clearly posted but navigating some of the interior roads in Mckelvie can be challenging.
