School of Rock and this NYC team in particular, under the music directorship and lovely charisma of Bob Jones, is truly a fantastic, well managed and fun institution. The students arrive full of enthusiasm to learn and play, and they leave excited to practice and share what they have learned. This school teaches more than just music. It teaches emotional development, confidence, self-esteem and team work. I am thrilled that my child attends this school and I couldn't recommend highly enough or praise it sufficiently either.
My son wanted to learn to play the drums, but living in a nyc apartment made it unlikely that i would invest in a set of drums when it could end up being a whim. The combination of a private lesson with practice with their own band is so appealing and my son is having a great experience. It ends up being 3 hours a week which is just enough to have fun and learn and not too much that its overwhelming to their schedule. What kid doesnt want to be in a band!
Jen, who is vocal teacher at the School of Rock is an absolute gem. She is patient and uplifts my child week after week. I cannot rave about her enough!
As an guy who last played music in high school, I was looking around in New York for evening classes to pick up on my somewhat rusty piano, almost nonexistent guitar, and totally untrained singing skills. Where better to combine these than at the School of Rock? I signed up to some 'summer jam' sessions and immediately signed up again with the adult program - individual lessons and supervised band rehearsals.Friendly and fun, the teachers and staff are always accommodating and contribute to a happy, relaxed atmosphere. Performance nerves ebb away as our band improves in rehearsals. At our live performance we rock out at the legendary 'Bitter End'!
My daughter has patient teachers who are kind and easy to interact with. They have a sort of ‘go with the flow’ way of teaching which she needs while instilling the rules of instruction. The instructors seem to be able to look at a child and know what direction to take. This is an ability that is hard to find and I appreciate greatly. As this is a creative field a fluid approach is, at times, necessary. Having met various front desk persons I’ve found each to be well mannered and easygoing, perfect for this environment. The school reeks of a nyc recording studio! With the red curtains, dark walls and hallways lined with different types of guitars to music playing throughout the building. It is definitely an artist haven for the up and coming young adult musician. Happy my daughter can be a part of this experience.
My 9 year old son takes private drum lessons with Sam and takes the great Rock 101 class. He loves the classes! I think they are very enriching for him and I’m very happy with the school, teachers, and the program!
My son had so much fun collaborating with the other kids for Led Zeppelin week. He usually takes classical piano lessons so playing keyboards for rock music gave him a deeper understanding of the Instument.
School of Rock has changed my son’s life! He found his thing in drumming. He started with private lessons, quickly moved on to Rock 101 and has now done 4 performance groups. He loves the music he has learned David Bowie, Beastie Boys, Beck, Fleetwood Mac, The Cure, Tina Turner, Heart etc. His teachers have been fantastic and the program is well run. I recommend School of Rock upper East Side to all my friends!
Adults, not just kids, can take lessons and perform. So much fun!
