Shawn Maguire

My husband chose Shawn to help salvage our marriage and I was resistant to his counsel at the outset. At first, I honestly didn't think Shawn understood the true issues that we were facing. Then, he asked my husband to step out so that he could ask me some questions I wasn't comfortable answering in front of my husband. At that point I realized he knew exactly what was going on and recommended that I seek counsel on my own for the time being. He also referred my husband to a colleague who accepted his insurance. Shawn's goal was to help us heal and reconcile and he gave me the path and tools I needed to begin healing. He also helped me reconnect with God and to seek my value and identity in Him instead of people. Shawn has been a blessing and tremendous help. He has done everything in his power to help me to a place where I was ready to reconcile and start joint counseling again. Unfortunately, I have decided that I need to move on for my own well-being. Shawn has helped me through the most difficult season of my life. I highly recommend him to anyone that needs Godly counsel and is willing to do the hard work of looking at yourself so that you can change your life.

I have been to other therapists so why him? What makes him so different? If I were going to wrap Shawn Maguire up in a neat little box to sell to a potential client I am certain I would fail at the task. But when someone comes to me hurting and asks who I would recommend, this is what I share: I have brought all kinds of things into Shawn's office- parenting issues, marital issues, anxiety, depression, grief, abuse, and other struggles from my past. Some were very heavy things. During one of these appointments I asked Shawn how he does the work he does. How does he sit through the stories, the struggles, and the suffering of others and still be able to come back to the office the next day? I am not at all sure what I expected him to say, but his words in those next moments deeply impacted me as they revealed much about his heart toward the people he serves and his surrender to do the work he has been called to do. Shawn said, "I keep in mind that it is God who heals, God who saves, and God who restores. I provide opportunities and context to work through and rely fully on God to do the healing." He could have voiced a list of degrees, expertise from training, and experience from years of practice as a counselor building himself and his abilities up, yet in humility he chose instead to draw attention to God and give all the glory to God by saying that while he is available to be used of God, it really is God doing the work. And that, my friends, took all the pressure off giving me the confidence I needed to know that I was in the right place for healing. It assured me that I could show up with all my "stuff" and find him in the trenches beside me waging war in prayer and encouraging me through the battle, not standing up at the top with a flashlight shouting orders and telling me if I was doing it right or wrong, knowing God was going to be there in the midst leading the steps toward victory and freedom. That is the difference. You feel it in the atmosphere of that place as soon as you step through the door. So what are you waiting for?

Shawn Maguire is the therapist that other therapist refer to. His years of effective therapy and reputation are next to none. His reputation in marital therapy amongst colleagues is the tops. What I can say about Shawn comes from a different perspective, in that I had the opportunity to work with Shawn and know the character of the man aside from therapy. If you’re looking for a therapist who truly cares for his clients and prayerfully approaches therapy, that’s Shawn. If you’re looking for a therapist who is relatable and approachable, that’s Shawn. He’s both a skilled clinician and a genuine person, which is more rare than you’d think. You cannot go wrong with Shawn Maguire.
