I had a unique and challenging issue that Shives addressed extremely well. Originally from Ohio, I moved to Columbia 5 years ago. My mother, 86, lived with me. My mother died suddenly in my home and services with our family were planned in Ohio. The challenge was getting my mother transported to Ohio in time for services. Shives went beyond the call of duty to arrange a driver to transport her overnight. This solved all of our difficulties with arrangements. In addition, I have interacted with several team members at Shives before and after the funeral, they are all very sensitive and professional. I highly recommend Shives on Trenholm Road.
Shives Funeral Home was there for us from the moment we contacted them at the time of my Mother’s death and through each step of the arrangements. I can’t say enough about the professional, compassionate care our family experienced from Bobby Raines and all the staff at Shives. They were so helpful setting up the visitation at the funeral home, coordinating with the cemetery and helping us with every detail. They are not just a funeral home, they go above and beyond and seem to minister as a calling, not just a business. Our family is so grateful for all they did for us.
From the minute we arrived at Shives, we were treated with the utmost respect and kindness. I don't think I've ever encountered a more professional experience, particularly in such a stressful time. Our interactions with Bobby Raines were commendable. He was very sensitive to the needs of the family, paid attention to every detail and patiently answered all of our questions. We are most grateful for the support and assistance we received.
This family & friends owned funeral home is wonderful. They care for you and your loved one during the saddest time of your life. Our family has used Shives for over 50 years!
My sister's appearance was not as I expected. Makeup almost obsolete and hair was wet and matted. Very disappointed. Funeral staff not respectful today. So many issues today. This place has really gone down since being sold. Please go elsewhere!
You can't ask for kinder, more compassionate folks than those at Shives - they are attentive, knowledgeable and informative, without ever being pushy. I especially want to compliment and thank Bobby Raines, who handled the arrangements for both my stepmother and my Dad - he did a stellar job of honoring them according to our wishes and made everything run smoothly.
I cannot say enough good things about all the kind people at Shives. Bobby, Bill, Olivia, Donna and Amy were professional, compassionate, helpful, patient, understanding and responsive through out the difficult family process of burying my father. They seamlessly guided us through all of the decisions that were required and conducted a well managed funeral. They went above and beyond and for that I am grateful.
My brother and I met with Bobby Raines after the death of my dad. He was extremely kind and compassionate, and seemed to know the answers to our questions. Bobby responded quickly to any concerns we had. We would highly recommend Shives.

Joe Copeland was very helpful when Steve and I made some final plans. Highly recommend Shives - they worked so well with Steve's Dad many years ago when JD made his plans.
