Story

Sicardi Gallery was founded in Houston in 1994 by María Ines Sicardi. Today the gallery is a partnership that includes Allison Ayers and Carlos Bacino as well as María Ines Sicardi. The gallery features modern and contemporary work by artists connected in diverse ways to Latin America, and who range from emerging and mid-career artists to major art historical figures like Gego and Jesús Rafael Soto.

These artists have exhibited widely in museums and institutions internationally and are regularly included in art fairs and major art world events, including Documenta and major biennials from São Paulo to Venice. We work directly with our artists, coordinating exhibitions in the gallery as well as in museums and other institutions, and also support public art projects and publications.

Since its inception the gallery has sought to reveal challenging links that connect recognized modernists and younger artists from across Latin America, and to explore these relationships in monographic and thematic exhibitions that bring the work to ever-wider audiences in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. This is also achieved through lectures and other projects that complement our exhibition program.

Art is one of the most subjective things out there so I wont really go into my opinion. But the art didnt really align with my interests or values. The exhibition was laid out well and the staff were very involved in discussion with me about the artwork and the artist, which I really enjoyed. But the installation wasn't for me. I'll come back when it is switched out. I'm sure it will be high quality as well.
The gallery was beautiful. The art was beautiful however, I was disgusted by the way my friend and I were treated by an older short woman who worked upstairs. I am a recording artist who is always looking for inspiration and at the time was looking for a venue for an event. After being told by the lovely receptionist that I could not book the gallery, she insisted that we tour the gallery. She took us upstairs to view more of the art and shortly after my friend and asked to use the restroom. The older short womenwhite with short orange hair followed us into the bathroom to ask if we were “peeing”. I was on a private phone call and she asked what am I recording? I asked her is everything okay. She continued to ask us question and continued to follow us. She also rudely ask if I was even an artist. My friend and I walked into another part of the gallery to get away from her and she followed us again to watch us and then closed off another part of the gallery so we could not see it. We felt harassed and insulted so we went back downstairs and asked the receptionist is there a problem with us viewing the gallery, we also asked if people take tours normally, she told us no it was not a problem and that people tour normally. I am a young educated African American woman, and never had to deal that type of treatment in any public setting until now. This type of covert racism should be addressed. This woman in particularshort woman should be coached on interpersonal skills, or she should be provided with a discrimination course. She is prejudice against certain types of people coming into her establishment. I would love to have a conversation with the owner of this gallery also. So in 2019, people are still simpleminded enough to judge someone based on the color of their skin and the way they look.
One of the best galleries in Houston. Always has very interesting art and artists from or connect to Latin America. The staff are very friendly and kind, happy to show you around and explain about the art being shown. I really enjoy myself every time I go or take friends from out of town. The proximity to the menil is also a plus.
Wonderful, unique artworks mostly from Latin/south America. Look for the works not currently displayed to get full view. Have William show you around. Great location.
Contemporary Latin Art, Sicardi is a personal favorite. It's one of the only places in the country to see this type of art in a museum quality setting in an art gallery. Easy to miss, it's a metal building across from the Menil and HCP, it's simply a must for tourists. I recommend all my friends to stop by.
The best commercial art gallery in Houston. Their focus are contemporary Latin American artists. You will be blown away by the artists they represent.
The selection here is limited but the chosen works are stunning. The staff took the time to talk about the artists and things I should pay attention to. The only people is it's hard to know how to get in. The doors are locked even though they are open. I had to call from the parking lot to be let in.
one of my favorite abstract geometry gallery in the USA. Beautiful ample space. The staff is very helpful and incredibly professional. Highly recommended.
Buyer beware- poor communication, unsubstantiated research and misrepresentation of contemporary Latin American art canon. Dealings with this gallery have been nothing short of unprofessional.
Great gallery, and the folks are really nice. Very positive experience overall
