St. John the Evangelist Church

Story

St. John the Evangelist is a historic Roman Catholic Church at 2270 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The late Speaker of the House, "Tip" O'Neill, was a lifelong parishioner and graduated from St. John High School in 1931. His Requiem Mass was held in the church on January 10, 1994.The church was built in 1904 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The architects, Maginnis, Walsh & Sullivan, won four gold medals from the American Institute of Architects. One was for St. John's.HistoryUntil the early 1890s North Cambridge and West Somerville were part of Saint Peter’s parish. Members from this section of the parish would travel long distances to attend Mass on Sunday. Because of rapidly growing industries and the growing number of immigrants, Father Flately, the pastor of St. Peter's Parish, worried that the young children would not get a proper Catholic education. In 1890, he purchased an acre of land on Spruce Street (now Rindge Avenue). On January 1, 1893 St. John's Parish became an independent parish and worshiped in a small wooden chapel on Rindge Avenue. In 1898 the estate of the late Horatio Locke, on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Hollis Street, was purchased for $18,000 as the site for the new church. The Locke house was moved to 8 Hollis Street and became the second rectory. In 1930 the third and present rectory was built of yellow brick at 2254 Massachusetts Avenue, on the site of the Woodbridge House, in Prance (Dutch) School Style with Moorish windows. Architect was William B. Colleary; builder was Walsh Brothers. The old rectory at 8 Hollis Street was razed. A monstrance made of gold, silver, diamonds and other precious stones, donated by parishioners, was used for a Holy Hour to begin the Holy Year in 1933. It was reputed to be the largest monstrance in the United States.

I was pretty surprised to find that the people who run this church "Who am I? I'm the one who runs this church!" are rude, entitled, and self important I discovered this surprising information when a couple of the staff jumped in front of a line of people patiently waiting for a covid test In response to my daring to question him this delightful person told me he "could uninvite" me from getting tested I can honestly say you learn something every day
Several years ago, I didn't have enough money to buy groceries. I went to St. John the Evangelist Church, and even though I was not a member or a regular attendee, they assisted me with Gift Cards to local grocery stores. I went there recently to donate $100.00 to the church and give back. I just finished my first year of full-time employment at my job. I am excited to be able to give back. I know there are many people who are facing financial difficulties at this time and struggling to put food on the table. I am happy to help.
Absolutely Beautiful Church. Good lower level for dining. Nice bathroom on main level but did not see one for lower of dining area. There could be one. For the occasion I attended, too many cars for parking lot.
Compassionate, welcoming, empathetic, and with beautiful music to boot! I'm so glad we found this church! Will update with more detail after we've been registered parishioners for a while.
The beautiful church bells ring about twice an hour or so, for as long as I can remember. Even as a young child but being around Cambridge so much it's hard to even realize it unless you go away for a while and then you realize what a nostalgic Chime it is and such a connection to the neighborhood since everybody hears them. Although you don't really "hear" them when you're here all the time because it just becomes second nature. Like I said you're going to appreciate them after you move away and return like I have or go away for a while. Its nice to hear such a beautiful musical sound that has been dependably ringing more than hourly for generations or at least alot of decades and brings a kind of unity of the entire neighborhood knowing the chimes that are so "home sweet home" to me are being heard by everyone else I the neighborhood weather it brings them the same meaning or another. Like college students may appreciate it on a different level than those born and raised cambridgians. And thsoe who work in Cambridge may hate the familiar sounds if it reminds them of having to go to work. Etc. These church bells may hold a different significance to each depending on what the city means to each. Either way, powerful nostalgic sound that has been reliable for Soo long.
