More of a production than a Mass and devoid of reverence. The priest hurried through Mass and was emotionless. I counted 31 extraordinary ministers, clad in everything from sweatshirts to stiletto heels. To be fair, a large number of people at Mass but certainly didn't require 31. The word "extraordinary" is lost on them. The priest cleared the altar like he was clearing the dinner table. If you like new age Catholicism that's about you and minimizes the Eucharist, this is your place.

St. Matthews Catholic Church is located in South Charlotte and is apparently one of the largest Catholic churchs, in terms of membership, in the U.S. St. Matthews School is located on the church property as well. The mass worship style is considered contemporary in contrast to traditional litugical worship services in other Catholic churchs in the Charlotte area.

I went to drop off some yarn yesterday then stopped in the Gift Shop where I began to weep. The most kind lady in the Gift Shop asked if I wanted to see a priest. That's when I met Fr. Elias and he took the time to comfort me. After our visit, I prayed in the Church and then visited the Blessed Mother statue outside surrounded by rose bushes. It was more than I ever expected.

I'm new to the parish, and I attended the 9:00 Friday mass (ordinary time). I knew the parish was large, but I didn't realize just how sizeable a crowd would gather on Friday morning! Still, there was plenty of room. The priest was eloquent and his homily was brief but informative. Unfortunately, no one seemed to know how to sing the responses properly, and there weren't any booklets offered; I even overheard the priest himself after mass exclaim to a parishioner that it was a "train wreck!" No one welcomed me personally, or announced a welcome to visitors at all. Only one gentleman to whom I offered my hand in the sign of peace offered his back to me, and it was obviously done begrudgingly. Thankfully, I come mostly for the holy sacrifice of the Mass Itself, and in that regard, it was beautiful. I really enjoyed the use of the bells announcing the offering up of the gifts, and the incense offered afterward for the Adoration procession. Hopefully the parishioners at the Waxhaw church are friendlier and more welcoming.
