This is a must-see peak. The approach is somewhat deceptive, it's a relatively gradual slope on the West side of the mountain. The fault on the East side is practically vertical, terminating in the desert far below. Definitely worth the drive and (short!) hike to the top.

Steens Mountain should be on your bucket list. Try to go in July to enjoy the green hills and spring g flowers. Or in October to see the colors on the Aspen trees. The Frenchglen hotel makes for a great spot to base your stay.

It's best to go in Early July for the best views.

The greatest mountain that can also almost constitute a mountain range on the face of the earth. I mean a giant fault block just pops up out of the Desert and says IMMA TAKE ALL THE PRECIPITATION FROM HERE ON OUT THANK YOU VERY MUCH. And with that rain and snow the mountain creates the mighty Donner und Blitzen River which doesn't have the heart to leave its desert friends for the ocean and deposits all its water into the Harney basin. It's almost as if the landscape were alive. Hawks love this mountain so it's a great place to see windhovers glorifying Hopkins's poetry.
