Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Story Theater Grand Opera House is 104 years old and it has never closed.
Todd Thorson has operated the Story Theater since December of 1983, taking over the theater operations from Dick and Virgil Peterson. The Petersons came to Story City, along with their parents in 1946, and ran the theater for 37 years. Thorson is now in his 33rd year in business, to go along with the 103 year anniversary of the historic opera house. The Story Theater has the distinction of being one of the oldest continually running theaters in Iowa as well as the country, having never closed its doors in its 103 years of existence.
