It is a small library that is leaving the metro station before reaching street level. and if you are on the street, you must go down to the subway access at the corner of building 560. In this site you have the services of the network of public libraries of new york loan of books and computers.
It was relatively easy to sign up for a library card, as I had some mail with me. However, the whole process of printing was ridiculous. I had to sign up for a card, figure out the slow AF system of logging into my email after waiting for the laptop to clear the browser history, then send the print job to the printer. It makes you log into the printer with your library card number and its separate PIN...then it deletes your print job, eats your money, and the person at the desk claims you’re a liar because it deleted your job from the queue and therefore she doesn’t see it in her system. I was late to a meeting and the machine ate $1 of mine. I am thankfully able to afford losing only $1 but there are plenty who can’t. This needs to be fixed.
It’s small, and the only window is the door, as it’s partially underground but it’s clean, quiet, not crowed, and a good place to do work. You enter it via the subway entrance. It also could use a renovation- think plastic tables, black plastic fold up chairs, a hard tile floor, and the hum of a printing machine/ air conditioning unit. Lighting is also subpar: think harsh flouresent lighting. So for architecture, apearance, design, and sounds, I wasn’t impressed. I would love to see a really beautiful and relaxing reading room interior with great light & plants. Maybe I have high expectations, but this isn’t 5 stars. However, for my purposes today, it did the job. I sat at the table facing the clear doors aka the window. I found a table, and an outlet to plug mg laptop into. There is free wifi, and it’s much less crowded than the starbucks nextdoor. Also, the people here are kind, although be warned: you can’t eat your lunch in here news to me!. They have a small selection of books too, which appear in good condition. Anyway, it served the purpose and it’s a good quiet place to go if you want to be productive.
Small, but never crowded, quiet, a good place to read, get online, study...friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff.
